Pork barrel update from the National post

Now if Mr. Harper would only put taxpayers' money where his mouth is, and mothball corporate welfare, then that would really make a statement. Sadly, in a possible election year, the PM is about as likely to do that as to return Helena Guergis to the Conservative caucus. This government is all too happy to dole out regional cash, whether through Canada's Economic Action Plan or outright make-work projects (witness last week's announcement of a payroll centre in Miramichi, New Brunswick to replace jobs lost there if the gun registry goes belly-up).

So where does this leave Canadian taxpayers? Playing angel investor to businesses that don't pay back money, while bureaucrats crow about their "success" - and the government turns a blind eye.

Wher are you in the apathy cycle? Food for thought

 Apathy! But Who Cares?

"But of that day and hour [the day of Christ's return to earth for all his true followers] no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is."1

The following warning is attributed to an 18th-century Scottish writer who said: "The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage."

I wonder in what stage we are in the U.S.A., Australia, Europe, New Zealand and the Western World? Could it be apathy? Very likely. Do we, as churches, care enough to do anything about the ever accelerating moral decline and do what we can to help make an impact on our societies? Do we, as individuals as well as churches, care enough to do everything we can to help spread the saving gospel of Jesus Christ across the street and around the world? For without Jesus, people are lost—forever.

More than 1,000 at healing mass - Chatham Daily News - Ontario, CA

Marie Alexandre witnessed many miracles Saturday during a Catholic healing mass and service.
"Last night was unbelievably powerful -- beyond description," she told The Chatham Daily News Sunday.
Alexandre organized the service at Immaculee Conception Roman Catholic Church in Pain Court. More than 1,100 people from southwestern Ontario and around North America attended.
"We saw major, major healings," she said. "It was unreal."
Alexandre said people went to the service with various ailments and left transformed.
"One gentleman walked in with a cane and left without it," she said, adding another woman had two canes and left the church without help, even going down stairs on her own.
She said a teacher who has suffered with debilitating neck pain for six years left so happy she was crying.
"The Holy Spirit comes upon the person to do the healing," Alexandre said. "God is just using this tiny little Father Fernando Suarez and given him a powerful gift."
People weren't just healed physically at the event, Alexandre said, noting others were transformed spiritually and mentally.
"People were crying because of healing of their hearts," she said.
Alexandre said the service has been in the works for two years, ever since she personally experienced Suarez's power.

She said he cured her of severe asthma at a similar healing mass in Dublin, Ont.
"I didn't really want to go," she admitted. "I did and within two days I was off medication."
She's been a firm believer in his gift ever since.
She said the event was so successful, she's planning to bring Suarez back for another service.
"This is his mission, to travel around the world and do healing masses and share his gift," she said.

The fine art of forgiveness is it possible ?

Do rigid and narrow interpretations of the rules contribute to the breaking of the rules?  Food for thought. -what makes law abidding people do bad things?  Interesting read

Corporate America -- No Place for Ex-Offenders  Lindsey Novak

Q: I had a good job for nearly all my life, until I made a mistake that landed me in jail. My wife left me and took my child. I felt my world had exploded, and I became angry and depressed. I wrote a lot of threatening things to her, but I would not have done anything. I know this was stupid, but I had an unloaded gun in my car and was arrested on a weapons charge. I got some bad advice from my lawyer and took a plea bargain. I served my time and have a felony on my record. I had never had any trouble with the law before this happened. I want to be a contributing member of society again; I want to work but have not been able to get another job. Because I have no income, the court now wants to put me in jail for not paying child support.
I always have been a law-abiding citizen and a productive part of society, and I know I have and want to fulfill my obligation to my child. Unfortunately, society won't let me work, and I've become more and more depressed. I did not hurt anyone, nor would I have.
Our society is pushing people to do the wrong thing. I am a good person, and I want to do the right thing. I would relocate anywhere for a job; I would join the Army willingly, but I am not even allowed to do that. What is left for me to do?

A: It is ironic that in our supposedly "Christian" society, people who should be willing to forgive and forget are not willing to forgive at all. Somewhere back in time, that one-too-many-lawsuit pushed corporate America over the line and shut down the potential for forgiveness. It then became too threatening and too risky for corporations to extend themselves and to take chances on what they considered high-risk employees; hence, we have policies that disallow ex-offenders jobs. The greater irony is that the violence that has come about in the workplace usually is caused by a quiet, law-abiding person's being pushed over the edge and exploding, with no one foreseeing or helping to deter the upcoming outbreak. The rigid corporate policies, the pushing out of longtime employees, the favoritism, the retaining of unfit and insensitive managers, and the zero tolerance for personal problems (not to mention overseas outsourcing) all have contributed to this current state of affairs.

Another point of view. I've known Toritse since 2004. This is what she wrote to me when I sent her your email. Mary PS. Will you send this to those you sent the 1st to?
Or just ignore it?

I find this propaganda disheartening as I often find its sent by people who try to incite more discord in people who are mulitculturally happy- thereby creating what they claim to want to avoid. I grew up in a family that embraces both Christianity and Islam- and understands and embraces the fundamental differences as well as the more obvious similarities. In my immediate closest circle of friends there must be at least 5 religions and many more nationalities. You will find that there are fanatics in every walk of life- yes during the Jihad muslims killed a lot of Africans but also during the African crusades millions were killed for not embracing christianity. The whole world forgets that Africa already had a religion. If you count how many people in total around the world have been killed by muslim fanatics you will not come close to the number killed by the united states army since 9/11- including our British soldiers with their 'friendly fire'. Please also note that this article was not written by Emanuel Tanay but by Paul Marek.

survival tips -how to fight back evryday annoyances

Ways To Get Rid Of Telemarketers, Part I
An old one, but a good one...

1. If they want to loan you money, tell them you just filed for Bankruptcy and you could sure use some money.

2. If they start out with, "How are you today?" say, "Why do you want to know?" Or you can say, "I'm so glad you asked, because no one seems to care these days and I have all these problems, my sciatica is acting up, my eyelashes are sore, my dog just died..." When they get try to get back to the sell, just continue your problems.

3. If they say they're Joe Doe from the XYZ Company, ask them to spell their name, then ask them to spell the company name, then ask them where it located. Continue asking them personal questions or questions about their company for as long as necessary.

4. This one works better if you are male: Telemarketer: "Hi, my name is Judy and I'm with Canter and Siegel services.... You: "Hang on a second." (few seconds pause) "Okay, (in a really husky voice) what are you wearing?"

5. Crying out, in well-simulated tones of pleasure and surprise, "Judy!! Is this really you? Oh, my gosh! Judy, how have you BEEN?" Hopefully, this will give Judy a few brief moments of terror as she tries to figure out where the hell she could know you from.

6. Say, "No", over and over. Be sure to vary the sound of each no, and keep an even tempo even as they're trying to speak. This is the most fun if you can keep going until they hang up.
Comment on this Story | Printer Friendly | Share

7. If MCI calls trying to get you to sign up with their Family and Friends plan, reply, in a sinister a voice as you can muster, "I don't have any friends...would you be my friend?"

8. If they clean rugs: "Can you get blood out, you can? Well, how about goat blood or HUMAN blood.

9. Let the person go through their spiel, providing minimal but necessary feedback in the form of an occasional "Uh- huh, really, or "That's fascinating." Finally, when they ask you to buy, ask them to marry you. They get all flustered, but just tell them you couldn't give your credit card number to someone that's a complete stranger.

10. Tell them you work for the same company they work for. Example: Telemarketer: "This is Bill from Watertronics." You: "Watertronics!! Hey I work for them too. Where are you calling from?" Telemarketer: "Uh, Dallas, Texas." You: "Great, they have a group there too? How's business/the weather? Too bad the company has a policy against selling to employees! Oh well, see ya."

11. Answer the phone. As soon as you realize it is a telemarketer, set the receiver down, shout or scream, "Oh, my goodness!!!" and then hang up.

12. Tell the Telemarketer you are busy and if they will give you their phone number you will call them back. If they say they are not allow to give out their number, then ask them for their home number and tell them you will call them at home. (This is usually the most effective method of getting rid of Telemarketers)

Milestone - Austn David new warrior and knight -

New generation is here

--

have fun with these proven health vices

Health.com) -- Permission granted: You can officially stop feeling
guilty about those little "bad-for-you" habits you can't seem to
break. Turns out, many of life's greatest indulgences bring big health
benefits -- helping you stay slim, fight off the blues, and kick
disease to the curb.
And we've got the 10 best right here, conveniently ranked by Health
magazine's expert panelists. Start at the top of the list to get the
most bang for your healthy buck, and keep moving on down to learn how
to boost your well-being in the most decadent ways possible.

Pleasure No. 1: Getting your zzz's: Our experts unanimously agreed:
Sleep is free and has virtually zero health drawbacks, making it the
one treat no one should skimp on. Pillow time gives you energy,
bolsters your immune system, boosts your memory, and even helps you
get (or stay) slim.
Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep a night, the amount that studies
show is ideal. Health.com: 8 factors that could be keeping you awake
at night

Pleasure No. 2: Playing hooky: There's a reason it's called a
mental-health day. Studies confirm that time off -- whether on a trip
out of Dodge or a 24-hour staycation -- relieves stress, lowering your
blood pressure and your risk for heart disease.
It also promotes creative thinking (attention, bosses!).

Pleasure No. 3: Sexual healing: Getting frisky is, hands-down, the
most pleasurable form of physical activity there is. Having sex
releases feel-good endorphins and oxytocin, the hormone that promotes
attachment.
"That component of feeling connected to another person really benefits
mental health," says Alice Domar, Ph.D., the executive director of the
Domar Center for Mind/Body Health.
Another plus: Subjects in one study who did it once or twice a week
had higher levels of the antibody immunoglobulin A, which shields you
from colds and other infections. Why doesn't sex rank higher on our
list? It can bring unintended consequences, from sexually transmitted
infections (especially if you're not currently monogamous and not
practicing safe sex) to "oops!" pregnancies.
Health.com: 10 reasons you're not having sex]

Pleasure No. 4: A daily chocolate fix: Our experts gave a hearty
thumbs-up to nibbling a little chocolate every day -- as long as you
stick to a square or two of the dark kind, to minimize sugar and fat
intake and maximize the benefits. (The temptation to overeat this
sweet treat accounts for it not making it into the top three.)

Pleasure No. 5: Girls' nights out: A flurry of recent studies have
shed light on how huge an impact our friends and family have on our
behavior, from what we drink and eat to how much we weigh -- for
better and for worse.
But there's little question that strong social ties can bring a host
of benefits: fewer colds, better brain health, and a longer life, to
name a few.
"Friendships are very good for you -- as long as you hang out with
people with whom you have a well-balanced relationship and limit your
time spent with people who are toxic for you,"

No. 6: Full-fat dressing: For years we were trained to reach for
low-fat everything, but there's no need to deprive yourself of the
real deal. Full-fat foods not only taste better but also serve a real
health purpose, as long as you get the right amounts of the right
kinds. Aim for at least 10 percent of your daily fat intake to come
from monounsaturated fats (found in vegetable oils, avocados, and many
nuts and seeds), . Plus, "when you have a meal that includes a little
fat, you tend to feel more satisfied, so you eat less," Gans says.
Still, no more than 30 percent of your daily calories should come from
fat -- even the good kind.

Pleasure No. 7: Your morning java: It's completely OK if you need it
to pry your eyes open in the a.m. A wealth of research suggests that
coffee doesn't just pick you up -- it fights heart disease and some
cancers, and it may even help you push through harder, longer
workouts.
Moderate coffee-drinking in middle age has been associated with lower
risks for dementia and Alzheimer's. And a 2009 review of more than
four decades of research found that for every additional cup of coffee
you drink each day -- high-octane or decaf -- your risk of developing
type 2 diabetes shrinks by 7 percent, possibly because chemicals in
the beverage improve your body's insulin sensitivity and increase
metabolism.

Pleasure No. 8: Getting a rubdown: Don't ever feel guilty about
shelling out for massages.
"In general, people who are touched regularly are healthier," Domar
says. And if your budget doesn't include spa services, consider
hands-on time with your honey.
Women in a 2008 study noted less pain, depression, anxiety, and anger
when they were massaged twice a week by their partners -- and (bonus!)
their partners reported better mental health, too.
Health.com: Which massage is best for you?

Pleasure No. 9: Basking in the sun: Bright days really do lift our
moods -- sunshine is the ultimate natural antidepressant, triggering
our bodies to nip production of the sleep-stimulating hormone
melatonin so we're alert, energized, and ready to face the day.
Exposing bare skin to the sun also triggers the synthesis of vitamin
D, a hormone that may reduce your risks for cancer, heart disease,
fragile bones, and other problems.

Pleasure No. 10: Wine with dinner: The buzz on wine is about its
heart-healthy properties, though researchers aren't entirely sure how
it works its magic. Its antioxidants may keep blood vessels flexible,
or alcohol could boost HDL (good) cholesterol.
Either way, the key is moderation: one 5-ounce glass a day. More than
that can raise blood pressure and pack on pounds.

how to stay stressed chuckle

Ways To Stay Stressed
Are you worried now about how to stay stressed? You'll have no trouble if you practice the following clinically proven methods:

NEVER EXERCISE. Exercise wastes a lot of time that could be spent worrying.

EAT ANYTHING YOU WANT. Hey, if cigarette smoke can't cleanse your system, a balanced diet isn't likely to.

GAIN WEIGHT. Work hard at staying at least 25 pounds over your recommended weight.

TAKE PLENTY OF STIMULANTS. The old standards of caffeine, nicotine, sugar, and cola will continue to do the job just fine.

GET RID OF YOUR SOCIAL SUPPORT SYSTEM. Let the few friends who are willing to tolerate you know that concern yourself with friendships only if you have time, and you never have time. If a few people persist in trying to be your friend, avoid them.

PERSONALIZE ALL CRITICISM. Anyone who criticizes any aspect of your work, family, dog, house, or car is mounting a personal attack. Don't take time to listen, be offended, then return the attack!

MALES AND FEMALES ALIKE - BE MACHO. Never ever ask for help, and if you want it done right, do it yourself!

BECOME A WORKAHOLIC. Put work before everything else, and be sure to take work home evenings and weekends. Keep reminding yourself that vacations are for sissies.

DISCARD GOOD TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS. Schedule in more activities every day than you can possibly get done and then worry about it all whenever you get a chance.

PROCRASTINATE. Putting things off to the last second always produces a marvelous amount of stress.

WORRY ABOUT THINGS YOU CAN'T CONTROL. Worry about the stock market, earthquakes, the approaching Ice Age, you know, all the big issues.

BECOME NOT ONLY A PERFECTIONIST BUT SET IMPOSSIBLY HIGH STANDARDS......and either beat yourself up, or feel guilty, depressed, discouraged, and/or inadequate when you don't meet them.

THROW OUT YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR. Staying stressed is no laughing matter, and it shouldn't be treated as one.

food for thought on adversity

A Lesson From Ben Hur

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."1

King Duncan writes how "there is a great lesson in the story of Ben Hur—a young Jewish lad who is charged with a crime he didn't commit. In a travesty of a trial he is condemned to the galleys. They chained him to a bench in the hold of a ship and to an oar. For weeks and months, then years he is forced to pull on that oar. If he should ever slack up, he will feel the sting of the lash.

"But finally Ben Hur escapes from this barbaric punishment. It is time for Ben Hur's famous chariot race with Mersala, the haughty Roman. The chariot race is ultimately a test of strength and endurance. As Ben Hur whips those great horses around the inner ring, it is clear that he is the stronger and more fit of the two. The years of pulling on the oar in the hold of a ship had produced a man of steel.

"There may be a great deal of injustice in our lives. We may feel that we are chained to an oar. But if we keep pulling, if we keep giving our best, [with God's help] we can become better people through our hardships."2

True, the trials of life can make us bitter or they can make us better. We can take the high road or the low road. It's never easy but the choice is ours.

Nashville priest in hot water over video- renewal or revolt?

Nashville priest in hot water over video

NASHVILLE (UPI) -- Possible disciplinary action is being considered
for a Roman Catholic priest in Nashville whose criticism of church
rules wound up on YouTube, the diocese said.

Bishop David Choby plans to meet again with the Rev. Joseph Breen over
the video that he posted on a conservative Catholic Web site and on
YouTube, touching off a flurry of criticism from upset viewers.

Breen agreed to remove the video after meeting with Choby late last
week, but The (Nashville) Tennessean said Tuesday that may not be the
end of it.

"The bishop takes this very seriously," diocese spokesman Rick
Mussachio told the newspaper, adding that Choby was considering a
number of possible actions.

Breen said the video had been meant as an outreach to Catholics who
left the church due to disagreements over church doctrine on issues
such as birth control and papal authority.

"When good men do nothing there are normally bad consequences and loses by default"- Sieg Holle BS MBA  About us

The purpose of this working paper is to see if there is the will or means in the community to save Shoprite ( Screenprint) and the 200 jobs in a revitalized and restructured form . The Shoprite Community Corporation or SCC model has proved effective in the past and  is a means to such an end .

Facts and background:

Fact:

Shoprite is a mature Brantford headquartered company with an over  50 year tradition of providing prosperity to the community or people of Brant /Brantford in terms of higher paying jobs ,municipal, provincial, and federal tax revenue,  and is both a purchaser and proven leading supplier of needed goods and services to the Canadian and international markets.

The company is in technical receivership with estimated assets of 2.5 million and liabilities of 5 million dollars. Over 200 jobs, with an average hourly pay level of $28 are at risk . The Receiver is presently running, and winding down the 2 facilities located on Elgin street  They are in the first stage of the receivership process and fulfilling existing orders. No formal RFP for the company or its assets have been publicly posted as is required. The entity is still in operation on a scaled down basis.

Fact:

Based on information provided by political candidates at the Taxpayer Coalition sponsored "Meet the Candidates" and other concerned citizens input- there are compelling reason to retain high paying jobs in the community.

  • One in four jobs in Brantford has been lost in the economic downturn which has placed additional strains on community services and other community businesses.
  • There are many empty or underutilized industrial factories  in the Brant/Brantford community. The economic base and tax base is eroding.
  • Two mayor candidates ( Sless and Calnan)  have expressed support and suggested that a community initiative be undertaken to save the jobs and company if feasible .

Should good men in the community do something? Are their benefits that override the risks? When is talk and political posturing not enough?

·        Why not find out ? – a prudent business strategy and community decision   What is required ? –basically a will to succeed.

o       The five step process is proven and simple  - pre-feasibility( public consultation), Feasibility, Business Plan, Financial /ownership Plan , Implementation

·        Leadership required – Who will champion the cause legally?

o       An entity is needed to consolidate community interests

o       SCC  is an entity which can be formed for the specific purpose

·        Considerations

o Do the creditors have an incentive to keep the restructured company alive by receiving  a benefit greater then getting a tax write off and write downs ?

§         What acceptable terms  can be negotiated in everyone's best interests?

o       What is the market for the existing and new products that can be produced and marketed by the restructured company?

o       What good men should serve on the SOS task Force committee and in what capacity?

o       What assistance is available from government or other sources?

§         Capitalize creditor write-offs

§         Incentives  -municipal, provincial, federal

·        Training

·        Equipment

·        Product service orders

·        Other

·        Guarantees

·        Tax deferrals and grants

·        Talent or services lend for task at hand

o       Time is of the essence

Other Points to be made:

  • Once  the company is decommissioned , it is a sad fact that it will be hard to revitalize . The cost of creating the same level of  jobs has proven to be more expensive. See Enterprise benchmarks . The following adages apply
    • A bird in hand is worth many promises in the bush
    • All the kings horses and all the kings men will not be able to put humpty back together again
  • Real time starts when the Receivers asks for public tenders or RFPs. Can we be ready ? It is estimated that this is a 3 to 6 month process.

Can the SCC model work?

Yes , with a few good men, real people that are  motivated, knowledgeable, productive  and with intelligent leadership

Should we make it work?

Yes , with real action , real energy , real plans, real people –not talkers or self interested posturing .

There are 1200 people ,their families, with  their purchasing power and influence  at stake.

Is it worth a shot?        Yes        Maybe        No

Have faith in yourself -you are more then just a number

. The Beautiful Ugly Duckling

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to
prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a
future".1

Most of us will be familiar with the children's fable of the ugly
duckling how a mother hen had six beautiful golden yellow chicks and
one ugly gray one. The ugly one was picked on by all the other chicks,
rejected, made fun of, and made to feel terrible because he was so
different. You can imagine how he felt. Some time later when all the
chicks were grown, along came a flock of beautiful swans. How the ugly
duckling adored them and lo and behold, he looked into the water and
saw his own reflection and came to the profound realization that he
wasn't an ugly duckling but a beautiful swan! His life was forever
changed.

Did you ever feel like you were an "ugly duckling" misfit? Many of us
have. Many still do. I've known beautiful people who felt and believed
they were ugly. In younger days I had a "girl friend" who told me I
was ugly. Tragically I believed her! She wasn't my girl friend very
long but the image she planted in my mind took a long time to erase.
When we define ourselves as ugly and believe it, it can be devastating
to our self-image and behavior and how well we do in life.

When parents or peers repeatedly tell us we are ugly, clumsy, stupid
or whatever, and we believe what they say and define ourselves that
way, we tend to act accordingly because we always act consistently
with what we believe deep down—no matter what we may profess.

I know it is easier said than done, but there is only one way to truly
define ourselves, and that is how God sees us. And when we see
ourselves this way, our life can be forever changed too!

Certainly God sees our wounded-ness, our brokenness, our sins, and our
failures, but he separates our person from our actions and sees beyond
these. He sees us as his creation and loves us with an everlasting
love. He sees the person in us that he envisions us to be . . . our
potential and what, with his help, we can become.

As Michelangelo said, "I saw the angel in the marble and chiseled
until I set it free." That's how God sees you and me. He looks beyond
the rugged exterior and sees the "angel" within each of us.

As God said to the ancient Israelites, he also says to you and me:
"For I know the plans I have for you . . . plans to prosper you and
not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

May God help each of us to see ourselves as God sees us, to see our
God-given potential, and with God's help become that person.
