Finding One's Wings for the Future

"Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it."1

It's an old story that we've all read about, but it's a good reminder as found in the following parable about "a new mother who discovered a butterfly struggling mightily to escape its cocoon through a tiny opening at the top. She became concerned when the creature seemed to give up after making no progress. Certain that the butterfly wouldn't make it out without help, she enlarged the hole slightly.

"On its next try, the butterfly wriggled out easily. But the young woman's joy turned to horror as she saw its wings were shriveled and useless. Her well-intentioned intervention turned out badly because it interrupted a natural process. You see, forcing the butterfly to squeeze through a small opening is nature's way of assuring that blood from the creature's body is pushed into the wings. By making it easier, she deprived the butterfly of strong wings."2

The same thing happens to children when parents over-protect them by doing too much for them, by spoiling them, or doing for them what they can and need to do for themselves, and by making decisions for them that they are capable of and need to be making themselves.

There can be a fine line knowing when to hang on and when to let go, but it's important to realize that, as parents, it is our responsibility to train up our children so that by the time they come to adulthood, they are capable of and responsible for taking care of themselves and are healthy, interdependent adults. True, good parenting requires parents to protect their children from harm, but being overprotective can cause children to grow up being emotionally immature or even emotionally crippled.

It's the struggles of life that make all of us strong and healthy. As blind and deaf Helen Keller once said, "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved."

"I think abortion is the injustice of our generation," Bissonnette said Friday. "It's another example of how we've denied personhood to different peoples throughout history, like Jews, natives, blacks ... In each instance, it's been expedient for different reasons. We're taking their land, we're taking their labour, or we're blaming them for some major catastrophe.

"With the unborn, we've denied them personhood because it's the necessary escape hatch for a sexually libertine culture. Sex is no longer within marriage. If people don't want their babies, they have to have a way to get rid of them."

In Canada, there are 100,000 abortions per year, "and it's legal right through the whole nine months," Bissonnette noted.

He added, "we're the only First World nation with no law on abortion," since the Supreme Court struck down the Pierre Elliott Trudeau government's legislation legalizing publicly funded abortion under strict circumstances.

Bissonnette said he believes the discussion about abortion and the judicial void should be reopened

Generic Drug Pricing Reform

promises to regulate retirement homes across the province. With
more than 40,000 retirement home spaces in Ontario and a
population of seniors expected to double to nearly 4.1 million
within 25 years, according to the Ontario Seniors Secretariat

That is not fair - who cares- and what to do about it-move forward

Shake outs are necessary to strengthen the roots and invigorate the trees of any project , Can you withstand the criticism ?

 

That's Not Fair    Zig Ziglar     ( Who cares -move on -do not waste your precious time on unworthiness )

 

I'm comfortable in saying that anyone who has ever done anything of significance has been, at one time or another, unfairly criticized by those who believe they deserve a reward for finding fault. Question: How do you handle unfair, unjust, erroneous criticism?

 

One effective way is to understand that even the innocent cannot make everyone they encounter a satisfied customer, a cured patient, a happy member of their organization or a true friend. Not because of what they do or don't do, but because all people have their own faults -- including the critics, particularly those who are unfair in their comments.

Solution: Ask for grace to differ from one another in love, particularly when we feel our adversary is wrong. A Jewish scholar of long ago, Paul, said, "With me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. I do not even judge myself -- it is God Who judges me."

 

One famous American, Dr. Edward Everett, also gives wise counsel. When a newspaper had published false and misleading accounts concerning a certain man, the man went to Dr. Everett for advice. After listening patiently to the man's complaints, Everett said, "My dear sir, do nothing. Half the people who buy that paper never saw the article about you. Half the people who did see it failed to read it. Half of those who read it failed to understand it. Half of those who understood it knew you and refused to believe it. Half of those who believed it were people of no consequence anyway."

 

Combine the wisdom of Paul and Dr. Everett and add what Stanley Jones said when he called his critics "the unpaid guardians of my soul," and you have an effective method of dealing with your critics. That should give you something to smile about.

Earlier today, our politicians in Ottawa denied Auditor General Sheila Fraser the ability to audit $500 million in their annual MP and Senator office expenses.

 

Clearly, this is not acceptable. Every other penny of government spending is subject to audit; so too should the expenses racked up by our MPs and senators.

 

While they claim they have "guidelines" in place to ensure the funds aren't misused, "guidelines" didn't stop a politician in Nova Scotia from expensing a video game or a UK politician from expensing the cleaning out of their moat!

Are we , Canadains getting value for our Health Care spending?. The objective report card or index relative to Europe is no. We need improvements . In Brief:

 The 3rd annual Euro-Canada Health Consumer Index compares the consumer-friendliness of the Canadian healthcare system to 33 European countries

• Canada lags while the Netherlands is tops
• Healthcare spending in Canada is comparable to the top-ranked European countries analyzed in this index but Canada still has a weak performance relative to Europe
• In Canada, wait times for diagnostic exams such as an MRI can last for months The typical wait time in top European countries is less than one week

Canada showed some signs of improvement in this year's index. Canada made minor improvements in its score in four of the five categories of indicators, with its score remaining unchanged in the fifth category.

Areas for improvement

The greatest weakness of Canadian healthcare remains long wait times. Wait times in Canada for diagnostic exams such as an MRI can last for months; in comparison, the typical wait time in top European countries is less than one week.  Wait times for orthopaedic surgeries such as hip replacements are also much longer in Canada than in most European countries.

Patient rights and access to information is another weak point for Canada. Bureaucratic obstacles and long waits often make it difficult for Canadians to access a second opinion about their own medical status, and patient rights are not codified in an explicit legislative guarantee

Access to the newest medicines is also somewhat delayed in Canada compared to Europe. It takes an average of 314 days for newly approved medicines to be entered in to provincial subsidy systems in Canada, compared to less than 150 days in countries like Ireland and Germany.

 

Action need-summary

"Most importantly, Canadians still face excessively long waiting periods for care. Canada spends as much money as the top performers on healthcare like the Netherlands and Germany, but we haven't been able to match their levels of efficiency. By looking at our own areas of relative weakness and examining European best practices, we can better understand where improvement is most needed and what sorts of reforms are likely to bring about measurable progress."

A lesson :The good sheppard saves his flock from unusual and unnecessary punishement in God's grace

In God's Grace  - lesson's from life for Christians
 
  There once was a man named George Thomas, pastor in a small New England town. One Easter Sunday
 morning he came to the Church carrying a rusty, bent, old  bird cage, and set it by the pulpit.
 
   Eyebrows were raised and, as if in response, Pastor Thomas began to speak....
  
  "I was walking through town yesterday  when I saw a young boy coming toward me swinging this bird
 cage. On the bottom of the cage were three little wild  birds, shivering with cold and fright.
 
 
  I stopped the lad and asked, "What do you have there, son?"  
  "Just some old birds," came the reply.

"What are you going to do with them?" I asked.

"Take 'em home and have fun with 'em," he answered. "I'm gonna tease
 'em and pull out their feathers to make 'em fight. I'm gonna have a real good time.."

   "But you'll get tired of those birds sooner or later. What will you do then?"
   "Oh, I got some cats," said the little boy. "They like birds. I'll take 'em to them."

The pastor was silent for a moment. "How much do you want for those birds, son?"

 "Huh?? !!! Why, you don't want them birds, mister. They're just plain old field
 birds. They don't sing. They ain't even pretty!"

"How much?" the pastor asked again.
 The boy sized up the pastor as if he were crazy and said, "$10?"
 
The pastor reached in his pocket and took out  a ten dollar bill. He placed it in the boy's hand. In a
 flash, the boy was gone. The pastor picked up the cage and  gently carried it to the end of the alley where there was a
 tree and a grassy spot. Setting the cage down, he opened the  door, and by softly tapping the bars persuaded the birds
 out, setting them free. Well, that explained the empty bird  cage on the pulpit, and then the pastor began to tell this story:
 
  One day Satan and Jesus were having a  conversation. Satan had just come from the Garden of Eden,
 and he was gloating and boasting. "Yes, sir, I just  caught a world full of people down there. Set me a trap,
 used bait I knew they couldn't resist. Got 'em all!"

  "What are you going to do with them?" Jesus asked.
 
Satan replied, "Oh, I'm gonna have fun! I'm gonna teach them how to marry and divorce each
 other, how to hate and abuse each other, how to drink and  smoke and curse. I'm gonna teach them how to invent guns
 and bombs and kill each other.   I'm really gonna have fun!"
 
   "And what will you do when you are done with them?" Jesus asked.
 
   "Oh, I'll kill 'em," Satan glared proudly.

  "How much do you want for them?" Jesus asked.

  "Oh, you don't want those people.  They ain't no good. Why, you'll take them and
 they'll just hate you. They'll spit on you, curse  you and kill you. You don't want those people!!"
 
 "How much? He asked again.
 
   Satan looked at Jesus and sneered, "All your blood, tears and your life."
 
  Jesus said, "DONE!" Then He paid the price.
 
The pastor picked up the cage and walked from the pulpit.  A true Christian leader having made his point.

Note: Isn't it funny how simple it is for  people to trash God and then wonder why the world's
 going to hell? Isn't it funny how someone can say  "I believe in God" but still follow Satan.

Fixing the rot from within - " forgiveness does not substitute justice "

Pope calls sex abuse scandal 'terrifying'

LISBON, Portugal (UPI) -- The Roman Catholic Church is more persecuted by "sin in the church," Pope Benedict XVI said Tuesday, discussing the sexual abuse scandals.

The pope talked to reporters during a flight from Rome to Lisbon, The New York Times reported. He plans to spend four days in Portugal, including a visit to the shrine at Fatima to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the beatification of two shepherd children who had a vision there of the Virgin Mary.

"This we have always known, but today we see it in a really terrifying way, that the greatest persecution of the church does not come from the enemies outside but is born from the sin in the church," he added. "The church has a profound need to relearn penance, to accept purification, to learn on the one hand forgiveness but also the necessity of justice. And forgiveness does not substitute justice."

Benedict's statements contrasted with those made recently by some Vatican officials accusing the news media of exaggerating the problem of clerical abuse by children.

The pope also discussed economic justice, an important issue in Portugal, which has been hit hard by the financial crisis.

 

Comment------------------We agree with the Pope-----------

 

Do not hid it, find it ,fix it - that is leadership . Our local paper has illustrated that the breach of trust rot and the pain that it creates is unfortunately everywhere . Let us acknowledge that ex priest Mackan did wrong . That the victim suffered greatly and that we as righteous Catholics and good people apologize for the suffering caused.

 

The victim has been fairly and "justly " compensated . The cause of suffering removed from  church authority and with disgrace . We apologize but it is now time to move on in the renewal process for everyone's good, including that of the victim of the abuse

Taken as a whole, we North Americans are overfed but undernourished. Socially, psychologically and physically, we are not fully meeting human needs. Although the TV commercials would have us believe that every itch can be scratched with a trip to the mall, the truth is we're consuming more now but enjoying it less. According to surveys taken by the U.S. National Science Foundation for the past 30 years, even with steady increases in income, our level of overall happiness has actually tapered off. Why is this?

Deficiencies of a Consumer Culture ( Faithless)

Many believe it's because a lifestyle of overconsumption creates deficiencies in things that we really need, like health, social connections, security and discretionary time. These deficiencies of a consumer culture leave us vulnerable to daily lives of dependency and passive consumption — working, watching and waiting. The typical urban resident waits in line five years of his or her life and spends six months sitting at red lights, eight months opening junk mail, one year searching for misplaced items and four years cleaning house. Every year, the typical high-school student spends 1,500 hours in front of the tube, compared with 900 hours spent at school. And this in not just an American addiction: a 2004 French survey representing 2.5 billion people in 72 countries documented an average of 3.5 hours of TV watched every day!

Yet, the game is changing. Just as we approach an all-time peak in consumption, converging variables such as shrinking resource supplies, necessitate changes in the way we live. Here's the good news: reducing our levels of consumption will not be a sacrifice, but a bonus, if we simply redefine the meaning of the word "success."

Instead of more stuff in our already-stuffed lives, we can choose fewer things but better things of higher quality, fewer visits to the doctor and more visits to museums and the houses of friends. We can choose greater use of our hands and minds in creative activities like playing a flute or building a new kitchen table. If we are successful as a culture, we'll get more value from each transaction, each relationship and each unit of energy; by reducing the waste and carelessness that now litter our economy — energy hogs like aluminum cans and plastic bottles, huge thirsty lawns, excessive airplane travel, feedlot meat and suburbs without stores — we can finance the coming transition to a lifestyle that feels more comfortable in the present and doesn't clear-cut the future.  more

   JUST A MOM ?  new bureaucracy definition

A woman, renewing her driver's license at the   County    Clerk 's office, was asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation.

She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself .

"What I mean is," explained the recorder, "Do you have a job or are you just a ....?"

"Of course I have a job," snapped the woman.

"I'm a Mom."

"We don't list 'Mom' as an occupation, 'Housewife' covers it, said the recorder emphatically.

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall.  The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, "Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar."

"What is your occupation?" she probed.

What made me say it? I do not know the words simply popped out.  "I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations."

The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair and looked up as though she had not heard right.

I repeated the title slowly emphasizing the most significant words.  Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written, in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in your field?"

Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't) In the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out).  I'm working for my Masters, (first the Lord and then the whole family) and already have four credits (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it).  But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money."

There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants -- ages 13, 7, and 3.  Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby) in the child development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.  I felt I had scored a beat on bureaucracy !  And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another Mom."

Motherhood ! What a glorious career !  Especially when there's a title on the door

Does this make grandmothers "Senior Research associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations"
& great grandmothers "Executive Senior Research Associates ?"  I think so !!!
I also think it makes Aunts "Associate Research Assistants."

Lee Strobel tells about a mother from Costa Mesa, California who told about the day her three-year old son was on her heels wherever she went. She was having trouble doing her routine chores.

"Whenever I stopped to do something and turned back around I would trip over him," she said. "Several times I suggested fun activities to keep him occupied, but he would just smile and say, 'That's alright Mommy I'd rather be in here with you.' He continued to follow me and after the fifth trip, my patience wore thin and I asked him why he was following me constantly."

He said, "My Sunday school teacher told me to walk in Jesus' footsteps but I can't see him so I'm walking in yours."

The Seven Roadblocks ( to constructive renewal )

Conversely, what are some of the roadblocks that often keep "B" Players from becoming "A" Players? Here are seven roadblocks:

Roadblock 1: Not having a philosophy of selling ( or doing ) that says you and your time are as valuable as your prospects and their time. ( time wasting  and not valuing your time )

Roadblock 2: Having a sales manager who doesn't hold you accountable to a process that works. This is rampant. ( no consequences for bad behaviour )

Roadblock 3: Fear of (1) looking scripted, (2) not doing it perfectly, (3) appearing pushy and (4) of success. ( fear of taking a risk fear of offending the status quo )

Roadblock 4: Not asking for clarification from a manager or an "A" player, but hanging out with other "B" players and commiserating about how tough things are in the field. ( comfortable with the turkeys and afraid to fly with the eagles )

Roadblock 5: Lack of repetition and practice. "B" players seem to be willing to stay "B" players and are content to be good enough not to get fired. ( marginal commitment )

Roadblock 6: "B" players are focused on their own insecurity, income, and problems. They don't realize that their prospect is just as insecure and probably has at least as many problems as they do. "B" players reason that they have a problem and the customer has the money. "A" players understand that they have a solution to a problem that is costing the customer lots of money. ( Problem solving not problem avoiding )

Roadblock 7: "B" players worry about being liked instead of being of service. ( being useful or being effective)
