Make an emergency preparedness kit

To  meet your needs at home or if evacuating

The Red Cross recommends that you keep a disaster preparedness kit in your home with enough supplies to meet your family's needs for at least 72 hours. By taking some time now to store emergency food, water and other supplies, you can provide for your entire family.

Store these supplies together in sturdy, easy-to-carry containers such as suitcases on wheels or backpacks in case you need to evacuate your home:

• Water: During an emergency, tap water can become polluted or supply may be cut off. Store two litres of drinking water and two litres of water for washing per person, per day, keeping a 72 hour supply on hand for your family and any pets. Listen to public announcements about treating the water in your area after a disaster. Once per year, make use of your water supply and add fresh water to your kit.
• Food: Store at least a 72 hour supply of non-perishable food for each person. Select foods that are compact and lightweight, non-perishable and require no refrigeration, cooking, preparation or added water. Once per year, check the expiration dates of your food items. Ensure that there is enough for each member of your family.
• Manual can opener
• Crank or battery-operated flashlight, with extra batteries
• Crank or battery-operated radio, with extra batteries
• Extra keys, for house and car
• First aid kit
• Cash in small bills
• Special needs items - medications, baby formula and diapers, and equipment for people with disabilities. Learn more about plans for people with disabilities.
• Copy of your emergency plan

Additional items to consider

• Change of clothing and footwear for each person
• Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
• Pet food and pet medication
• Garbage bags and twist ties
• Toilet paper
• Multi-tool or basic tools (hammer, wrench, screwdriver, etc.)
• Duct tape
• Plastic sheeting
• Scissors or pocket knife
• Whistle
• Hand sanitizer
• Personal hygiene items
• Important family documents (copies of birth and marriage certificates, passports, licenses, wills, land deeds and insurance)

As you know a council's good works and charitable activities are a key to its success. The more events or wider outreach a council has each year in its parish and community, the more lives it touches, the more members it keeps engaged, and the more prospective members it attracts. As you are aware, our Knights of Columbus activities and programs fall into six categories: Church, Community, Council, Culture of Life, Family and Youth. Every community has needs, and Knights of Columbus councils should help address those needs. One reason that we have asked every council to recruit one new member per month is each new member will be a new source of ideas and another volunteer to help others. Every new member increases the resources available to council in its charitable outreach: more food and clothing collected for needy families, more successful charitable fund-raisers, and more people whose lives are improved.

For generations, Knights of Columbus have served their communities. The efforts of council members united in charity and fraternity are a testament to our Catholic faith. This is how charity evangelizes, which is our mission and way of life.

Here are some reminders of the important upcoming events that we hope your council is involved in hosting:

October 20-21:  Orderwide membership drive in honor of council chaplains: This is a time to be visible in the parish and invite potential members to join our Order. Be sure to order materials and conduct an open house.

October 22-28: Orderwide First Degree Ceremonials: Welcome new members and make it convenient for interested candidates to join the Order.

November 24-25: Orderwide Corporate Communion Weekends: Invite all council members to attend Mass and received Communion as a group during the Solemnity of Christ the King. Sponsor a social event for the entire parish following the Mass.

Guide your council to be a Star Council or Double Star Council this fraternal year. It will be a great  accomplishment for both you and your council. It's easy to do using the Power of One, or link directly to: www.kofc.org/recruit1.

Do you ever walk into a room full of strangers with the sense that you are the only one who feels insecure? The fact is that others, at least some of them in that room, probably feel the same way, especially if they are also strangers to the group. Feelings of insecurity are part of the human condition because we are all wounded in some way to some degree.

We visited a new church on one occasion where nobody bothered to talk to or welcome us, so I decided to talk to others and welcome them. "It's good to have you here at church today," I said and asked, "are you a member?" In fact, just this last Sunday morning after church I saw a man standing alone, so I specifically went to speak to him and help make him feel welcome. He turned out to be a first-time visitor. A little later this same man sought me out to thank me for talking to him, and told me that I was the only person that bothered to stop and speak to him.

So, when in a group of strangers, talk to a person who may be standing alone and ask him/her about him/herself. This will get you out of yourself and in time you will feel much better about yourself. I'm not suggesting that we be phony, but sometimes we just need to acknowledge our fear, but don't allow it to control us or hold us back from doing the right thing.

If we keep reaching out to others with a sincere motive and do the loving thing, in time this will help us to become more secure ourselves. It may be a challenge at first, but it is what Christ commanded us to do. That is, to love one another. One way to do this is to reach out to a stranger in your midst who is all alone.

Welcome back from the summer break . This will be our first official meeting  of the executive and members  for  2012 2013. 

 

The last 2 weeks  of the month will be busy with our Parish Council Knights activities. ( Please pass this on to fellow council members)

 

• Thursday  September 20  -St Pius EXECUTIVE meeting   starts at 7 duration 1 hour max -this meeting is to finalize and  the direction for the new year

Financial status and new plans and programs to improve our programs

Financial status -dues outstanding -any outstanding liabilities

Special Community fundraising programs -  Knights Snack wagon , Nevada tickets , other programs ( Canada Helps=Dufferin Club)

Normal good will fundraising events -Car Draw

Parish related events  Breakfasts Rose Sunday - ( open to new initiatives)

Hospital and family visits  for the good of the order and parish

Thank you Brothers -Canada Day at Lions Park was fun and a success

Proud to be a Canadian -Proud to be a Knight - That is what Canada Day is all about

 

Too all who attended Canada Day Celebration  and put smiles on community  faces manning the KOC snack wagon  -particularly Ken - thank you -it shows what we as Knights are all about  in this community. You did it unselfishly  -you did not talk about it -you are are a doer of good deeds. Just great !

Our civil and religious liberties are precious -least we forget

Renewal of purpose 
There are many important issues facing our society and order today . History appears to be repeating itself  -almost to the same conditions that lead to the founding of our order. Many natural rights , many religious rights, many economic rights  have been challenged and attacked by groups who do not seem to respect these rights and are actively pursuing effective means to reduce them in the name of progress or special public interest  .

It is our greater duty , our more relevant duty to ensure that we protect our membership, our bill of rights and our community at large for what  we , the Knights of Columbus , rightfully stand for. We are concerned that the war on terror is actually a means of creating unlimited terror  on all citizens  and at the expense of well defined civil freedoms .        Sieg Holle  BS MBA

Activity report of our Council St Pius X 9262        

January 1st to June 30 2012

When I started this I just did not realize how much was accomplished in this 6 Months so I am saying brothers take a bow. An if you reflect you will see that the rule applies to our council an that is 15% of the members has done 85% of the work, just think of how much we can accomplish if say that 15% was increased to 25% doing 85% of the work. I truly believe that we have a great council and so Brothers take a bow, hold your head high as a group of Catholic Christian men.

We started the year with the decision to rebuild the Snack trailer as requested by the Brantford Brant Health Department, an as many of you know it cost more than I had estimated. I must at this point that with the great effort of Brother Ray Trudel we ended with a snack trailer that is worth the value.

While the trailer was being rebuilt we were selling tickets in the mall an although we were not as successful as prior years. Our Nevada Function was moving along and we now have more money to give to the St Pius youth and to the Canadian Brant Blind Guide Dog.

In February we held Shrove Tuesday and from all reports it was another successful function.

In March we held our first breakfast of the year an again it is reported to have been successful

We then had the opportunity to give the Snack trailer its first function of the year an although it was very cold we sold out most of the food and had to go and buy more, again it was successful.

In May we attended the Diocesan District meeting. Distributed Roses on mothers day an sent the funds to support the protection of the unborn.

We attended the State Convention on May 19th and did not have a winner in the car ticket draw; we should receive our check soon and will be sending a portion to help in the research of arthritics. An to other worthy causes egg the northern missions and the Bus Sign campaign against phonographic material.

We entered again the Ball hockey tournament for 3 days in June but here we sort of got into trouble by not planning better but who doesn’t make mistakes we will do better next time.We were also not able to predict other events that negatively impacted on this event. Hockeyfest was cancelled and torrential rains ensured that we cancelled one day of activity. We broke even on the event and did better then most other participants in the event despite the unusal circumstances.

We also attempted to hold a another breakfast June 3rd on the same day as the 3rd day of the Ball Hockey Tournament. We fell down but we will take all criticism on the chin and learn from it.

On June 15th we attended with the snack trailer, the Old Car Show at Versa Care and it is in support of Grandmothers for Grandmothers (woman raising children of parents who have died from Aids in Africa) this is our 4th year doing this function.

We have entered the Canada Day function at Lions Park with an entry fee of $500.00 and we will need 12 volunteers of 3 per shift for 3 hrs. I will be working the phones this week but it is always easer when brother knights call an offer to work a shift or inform myself that you are not available.

Most of what I have written is on the monetary side but I would be ad miss if I did not mention  some of the function that we as brother knights are active in and there is always room for more knights being involved, example Ushers, readers,  Eucharistic ministers, parking, Blood Clinic, hospital work an visit the sick etc.

Remember that our Father Tim is carrying the load that not two many years back was handled by 3 Priest, our main function in this parish is to be Fathers Tim right hand when, where an what he requests.

  Comments from our council members

We must respect our members time and use it more effectively . Many of our members give their time freely and generously for the good of our causes and order. It is important that this time is treated with respect and not taken for granted.

It is true that many hands make for easy tasks . If those that commit to tasks and timings do not participate or deliver  as promised ,it causes major problems for those that are responsible for organizing and ensuring  the  success of the event . We will be addressing this challenge in the new year  .

I am the acting Grand Knight at the Knights of Columbus . We are going to provide refreshments at the Gretzky street hockey event. for the Lung association at Lions park . We paid our "city" dues and are ready to enjoy this key family and sports event of over 200 teams . Thankfully the Walter Gretzky street hockey tournamet .is not affected .by the other Hockey fest event.

Walter Gretzky having successfully put our City and Brant on the map positively for 6 years .
 It is disturbing that "our" city with all its paid horses and men could not organize Hockeyfest  at the cost of all the volunteers time and a potential sullied reputation. That they could not hire -more security is a mystery which is disturbing to say the least . Many ask who is accountable for this apparent shoddy  breach of public and volunteer confidence in Brantford?

The good news is that the Walter Gretzky street hockey tournament is still on for everyone to enjoy at Lions park.  Pleae come and enjoy the activities at Lions park this weekend

Seven area seniors organizations received a total of $98,942 Friday from the federal New Horizons for Seniors grants program.

Brant MP Phil McColeman announced the funding Friday morning at the Brantford Seniors' Centre, with representatives from each of the groups in attendance.

"The New Horizons' funding arrangements are about maintaining the vitality of different organizations in different ways," McColeman said. "It's you who are, as organizations, enriching people's lives, creating a caring community and a community that's vibrant through all stages of life."

Here are the grants:

• $23,402 to the Grand River Employment and Training to support mentoring and workshops promoting Haudenosaunee customs and traditions;

• $23,000 to the Sjogren's Society of Canada to help seniors in the organization create an educational video on the disease;

• $20,320 to the Six Nations Long-term Care / Home and Community Care - Health Advocacy for youth mentorship projects and sessions on elder-abuse, food preparation and crafts;

• $9,700 to Fairview United Church to replace its furnace and security system;

• A combined $14,748 in two grants to the Brantford Seniors' Resource Centre to purchase equipment for its greenhouse project and create informational pamphlets and booklets on seniors' scams and elder abuse;

• $4,272 to the Brant Seniors to replace furniture and a dishwasher;

• And $3,500 to Village Italia for the development of a digital-photo cookbook.

McColeman said that the program continues into 2012-13, with applications being accepted until this fall.

It's said there are only two sure things in life - death and taxes.

You can't cheat death forever, but you can help lower what the government gets from your estate in taxes, by giving to charity.

Lawyers, financial planners and professional fundraisers were among those attending the Chatham-Kent Planned Giving Summit 2012 in Chatham on Friday.

Brad Langford, chair of the Chatham-Kent chapter of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, said the goal is to get professionals start a conversation with clients about the tax benefits of charitable giving in their wills.

The people giving advice on wills and financial planning are often the best people to raise the issue, he added.

Langford said charities and fundraisers for various groups are facing greater challenges raising money.

"Because the economy has been rough, it's very tough to get people to commit to give money now, often for very good reasons," he said, "because they don't have the money now."

Langford said an effort is being made to develop an alternative model to aid charitable organizations in a way that won't impact the donors' ability to pay the bills, but allow them to make a contribution to an organization they support at some point, which could be after their death.

"People often forget what they have at their death may be fairly substantial," he said, adding often some substantial tax issues may arise as well.

This often occurs after the death of a surviving spouse, he said, noting there could be a principal residence, cottage their children don't want to take over, and RRSP proceeds.

Lawyer Jonathan Quaglia, a partner with the law firm of Spisani Quaglia, spoke about the legal considerations for planned giving.

He noted there will be taxes to pay when someone dies, but there's an opportunity to offset that by donating to charity.

However, Quaglia said a tax deduction will only be given if the gift is donated to a charity registered with the Canada Revenue Agency.

"It's important for us to talk to our clients (about charitable giving), because the government is hoping this will put more money into communities," he said.

Quaglia said if someone is planning to make a substantial gift, it is advisable that the immediate family be aware of it so there are no surprises.

Langford said the local chapter of gift planners is still in the early stages of raising awareness about this issue.

"It's a relatively long-term process to change people's attitudes to start thinking about making these kinds of gifts, and that's really what we're in the process of trying to do right now," he said.

He praised the peaceful resistance of many lay organizations saying, “First of all we mention the Knights of Columbus which is found in all states of the Republic and fortunately is made up of active and industrious members who, because of their practical lives and open profession of the Faith, as well as by their zeal in assisting the Church, have brought great honor upon themselves.”

Indeed, thousands of Mexican Knights sacrificed much for religious liberty. Many lost their lives, and some of these martyrs — both laymen and priests — have been beatified or canonized by Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. Knights in the United States also led a national campaign to end the violence against Catholics in Mexico.

Catholics in the United States face an unprecedented situation — one that threatens the essence of our religious freedom. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ health insurance mandate will force Catholic organizations to provide insurance coverage for sterilization, contraception and abortifacient drugs for their employees. This requirement, which takes effect next year, will be compulsory for every Catholic organization.
Under this rule, the Knights of Columbus will be forced to use membership dues and money generated through insurance sales to fund health care that provides drugs and procedures that violate the moral teaching of the Catholic Church on the transmission and sanctity of human life.
Constitutional scholars have described the administration’s mandate as unconstitutional and illegal. And the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has vowed to fight it, calling on the president to rescind his mandate and urging Congress to pass legislation to protect our religious liberties.
This is not only a Catholic issue. Thousands of Protestant ministers have publicly opposed the mandate, with some saying that they would go to jail before violating their religious beliefs.
In response to the firestorm of controversy that the mandate has created, the Obama administration has offered a so-called accommodation. But what has been offered is both inadequate and unacceptable.
The administration argues that since contraception is less costly than childbirth, insurers can provide this coverage for free, and therefore, Catholics and Catholic institutions should not be concerned. If the president’s logic were correct, insurance companies could offer many other prescription drugs for free, since controlling blood pressure and cholesterol, for example, is less expensive than treating patients for heart attack and stroke.
But we know that there is no such thing as a free lunch. The fact remains that Catholic organizations will pay for health insurance programs for their employees, and those programs will be required to provide services that violate our moral beliefs.

And the National Right to Life Committee has warned that the administration’s mandate may not stop there. The administration’s logic provides the groundwork for mandating abortion coverage in the future since abortion is less expensive than childbirth.

Never before has the federal government used its power to violate religious liberty in this way, insisting that religious organizations pay for programs that violate their moral convictions.

A decade after drafting the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Virginia Act for Establishing Religious Freedom. In it, he stated: “To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves, is sinful and tyrannical.”
In the 1950s, the Knights of Columbus led efforts to have the words “under God” added to the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. These words came from Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Like Jefferson, Lincoln knew that America’s greatness cannot be separated from the affirmation in the Declaration of Independence that we are a nation of inalienable rights “endowed by our Creator.”
In January, Pope Benedict XVI spoke out publicly about the new threats to religious liberty in the United States. He said: “It is imperative that the entire Catholic community in the United States comes to realize the grave threats to the Church’s public moral witness.”

Today, the Knights of Columbus has a critical role to play in defending our religious liberty. We must support our bishops when they insist that President Obama rescind his unjust mandate. We must also urge members of Congress to pass legislation to protect our liberties. And we must pray that this threat to religious freedom will be overcome.
We face a time of great challenge. Every brother Knight must do his part. Like so many brother Knights before us, I am confident that we too will stand firm in the cause of freedom and in defense of our Church.
