A Knight's star destinyLessons from the Maltese cross

Knight, when you were born, the 8 Cardinal Secrets of the Maltese Cross were destined to give you the direction for a winning life. What can we learn from the Maltese Cross and its lessons?

height=175
Dear Brother Knight,

"A voyage"

We want you to win! The moment that I saw this stunning Double Maltese Cross, I knew that it was a perfect fit for you. I know you are looking for change, and your desire to shape your life just the way that you want it is becoming stronger by the day. We have reached a turning point and will continue to grow.

Since we have been working together, I have seen you become more and more empowered in ways that are unique to you. In fact, you are now on the brink of winning the right to a healthier and wealthier life... this, Knight, is your true destiny. When You Were Born, You Were Destined to Become a Winner

There is no doubt that you've had to contend with setbacks and struggles over the years. But the truth is that you have come through them - with 'flying colors'! These circumstances of your birth had you come into this world at exactly the right time and in the right place to be predestined to achieve success and become a winner in life. But only if you take control and grab onto the one thing that can help you overcome the obstacles that have been blocking you thus far.

The Maltese cross

height=115

The One Thing You Need to Become a Winner, My Friend,

Is lessons of The Maltese Cross with Its 8 Cardinal Forces and

Its Empowering Combination of Faith and Talismanic Power.

FROM THE 12TH CENTURY TO THE 21ST, ITS FASCINATING HISTORY

height=178Andrew Bertie, the former head of the Order of Malta with Pope Benedict XVI
The origins of this piece go back for centuries. It was first used in 1126 as an identifying emblem for the Knights of St. John. Not only were these knights brave and adventurous soldiers, but they were also a Holy Order of monks, and in the 16th century they established a hospital on the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta. The Pope dedicated the foundation of this hospital.

height=134
Over time, the Knights of St. John transformed Malta into an island noted for its beautiful architecture and stunning artwork. Simultaneously, the familiar cross shape was          transformed into something unique to the Maltese Knights.

The arms each have 2 points, and the Cross resembles 4 arrow heads meeting in the center to create an 8-fold pattern. Each of these points was given a different Knightly virtue and the Cross acted as an aide-mémoire or even Mandala, to remind the knights of their duty.

These truths from the past become even more relevant and meaningful in 2010. In fact, they are wonderful reminders of the best way of manifesting a fulfilling and abundant life

Today's Relevant Truths  - 8 points from the Maltese cross to steer by-

height=151COMMITMENT - Knight, fidelity is a somewhat old-fashioned word these days, but to cherish your family and friends is the very foundation of happiness. A winning life is all the more pleasurable when you are surrounded by loved ones to share it with.

FAITH - Believing in yourself, Knight, is crucial to a happy life. You must have faith so that you may aspire to the very best in life. Lately it has been hard for you to keep the faith...now it's time to let this cardinal force guide you.

WEALTH - Knight, I believe that at this precious time of your life, it's your turn to live richfully. Believing that you deserve a certain lifestyle is your first step to achieving a life of glorious wealth.

SUCCESS - There are many ways to measure success, but the most important one is that you manage to fulfill your potential that's so evident.

LOVE - It's really true that the more you give, the more you receive. Love is a powerful force. People who have experienced great hardship often say that the only thing that kept them going is knowing that they were loved. I want this cross to bring the force of love into your life.

POWER - To be powerful is to believe in yourself and the direction you have chosen. In following your true  destiny, you will become an incredible force of power.

PROSPERITY - This describes the good fortune surrounding your destiny. This can apply to your health as well as the amount of opportunities that are about to open up for you.

PROTECTION - Protection from negative energy is indeed a blessing. This cardinal force works like a force field of protection, as it will surround your life with radiant protective energy.

PROTECTION AND COURAGE: ESSENTIAL FOR YOU AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME, Knight

The Maltese Cross is worn as a badge of both protection and honor by many organizations, among them the New York Fire Department. The tiny Island of Malta is renowned for its bravery, honor and loyalty. Its strategic position between Italy and North Africa made it vulnerable to the Luftwaffe during World War II. However, it never fell to the Nazis and the Maltese people's faith in the Divine never wavered. In 1942, a German bomb fell through the roof of one of the biggest churches on the island. Hundreds were inside but no one was killed. (The people took this as a sign of faith and protection.)

Later the entire Island was awarded for bravery by the then King of England - the only time this has happened.

Have Faith in yourself and the Divine that is always guiding you, Knight, will always overcome negativity.

These 8 Cardinal Secrets, Knight, will bring amazing changes into your life. They will replace any insecurity and self-doubt, bringing you confidence and a sense of well-being that will affect everything you do. The incredible forces of the mysterious 8 cardinal points will win for you the right to a far healthier and wealthier life as they bring out your exceptional qualities of:

1 Intuitive

2 Caring for others

3 Imagination

4 Creative instincts

5 Receptive to ideas

6 Understanding

7 Compassion

8 Faith

Moral compass needed to navigate life

There are Some Moral Absolutes  Zig Ziglar

Some things are just flat wrong, and some are absolutely right.

In this age of "relativity," many people suffer from the illusion that tolerance and relativity are the ways to go. Dr. Josh McDowell says that his surveys and studies show that our children's views about truth make a difference in their behavior.

His data proves that when our children do not accept an objective standard of truth, they are 48 percent more likely to cheat on exams, twice as likely to watch a pornographic film, two times more likely to steal, three times more likely to use illegal drugs, six times more likely to attempt suicide, two times more likely to be angry with life, two times more likely to be lacking purpose and two times more likely to be resentful.

Just as the compass gives us true north and the international time standards set exactness for time, there are truths that can be taught to our children that will benefit them all their lives. Admittedly, lying, cheating and stealing bring certain temporary advantages. However, when trust is destroyed -- as it ultimately will be -- the future of the individual who cannot be trusted is limited.

Unfortunately, parents often hide behind the old saw that they love their children too much to deny them anything. What they're saying is, "I'm not willing to risk finding out just how much authority I have and just how much my child loves me." Ironically, when there is divorce in the family, the child, when given the choice, will generally go with the parent who is more of a loving disciplinarian because children instinctively know their long-range best interests are served when absolutes are established.

Message: Parents, love your kids enough to do what is best for them, and I'll see you --and your kids -- at the top!

Fighting rudness - tips

Rudeness Is Rampant    Pier Forni, PhD   Johns Hopkins University

In today's fast-paced, youth-oriented culture, ageism often results in rudeness to older people. To find out how to handle this type of rudeness, Bottom Line/Retirement spoke with Dr. Pier Forni, founder of the Civility Initiative at Johns Hopkins University and the author of two books on civility and rudeness...

Why not just ignore rudeness? After all, it usually amounts to little more than a few ill-mannered words or a gesture.

Rudeness isn't trivial. It can cause stress, weaken self-confidence and harm relationships.By addressing rudeness head-on, you discourage this kind of behavior while building self-esteem and reducing stress. The key to addressing rudeness is to do it firmly but politely.

What should you do when someone talks loudly and slowly even though your hearing is perfectly normal?

Sooner or later, most older people encounter this type of behavior, which may be a misguided attempt at being very polite.

You might be tempted just to listen and say nothing about it, but that's usually a mistake. The other person may not realize that he/she is being ill-mannered. So politely inform the person that your hearing is good. But don't get angry or make accusations, which often leads to a stress-inducing argument.

Something like this usually works: "I appreciate your wanting to make sure that I hear everything you say, but I can assure you that my hearing is fine."

Assuming that you know nothing about technology, a store clerk talks to you as though you were a child. How do you set the clerk straight?

If you are technologically savvy, mention something to the clerk that gets this point across.
If you're buying a computer, for example, you might tell the clerk that your current machine has a Pentium dual-core processor with a 250-gigabyte hard drive. The clerk will get the message.

On the other hand, if you don't know much about the product you're buying, do some homework before shopping -- a strategy that makes sense at any age.

A maître d' seats you at an uncomfortable table in the back of the restaurant. Meanwhile, younger customers are given better tables up front. What is the best way to handle this?
Immediately tell the maître d' that you want another table. If the second table he suggests isn't better, ask to speak with the manager.

Tell the manager something like this: "We're here to enjoy our dinner, but that will be difficult at this table. We don't want to leave, but we'll have to if you can't help us get a better one."
Never be afraid to leave an establishment where you're not treated well. In this case, remember that you're paying the same prices that younger diners at the front tables pay. Sure, you may wind up having to go to another restaurant, but the inconvenience will probably be more tolerable than sitting through a meal at a table that you dislike.

According to the stereotype, older people often drive too slowly. So what should you do when you're driving at the speed limit but the driver behind you honks, flashes his lights or even tailgates?

Driving is one of the few occasions when you shouldn't confront a rude person. Rude drivers are often under stress, and confronting them can lead to an accident.

Instead, depersonalize the incident. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that the other driver would likely honk at any car that was driving at only the speed limit. In fact, the driver probably hasn't even noticed that you're older. So let him pass, and resist the temptation to curse or make a hand gesture, which risks escalating the incident into violence.

And don't equate honking with rudeness. The other driver may actually have an emergency and need to get around you. More likely, however, he's just having a bad day. (It happens to all of us.)

Incidents like this illustrate an important point: Happiness in life depends on being satisfied with our decisions -- not immediately after we make them, but later on when there's time to reflect. It might be immediately satisfying to curse or make a hand gesture, but on reflection, you'll almost certainly regret stooping to someone else's level or being rude yourself.

Today, e-mail from friends can be a major source of rudeness, typically in the form of forwarded messages with coarse jokes, political commentaries, etc. What's the best way of dealing with them?

Don't shy away from asking the sender -- either by e-mail or telephone -- to stop mailing these messages to you. Politely say that you appreciate the information but that you don't have time to read it. Then, if the sender is a friend, consider making a gracious gesture, such as saying that you would like to get together for lunch or coffee in the near future.
In fact, being considerate and civil can go a long way in preventing many types of rudeness.

Most people you deal with will take that attitude as a cue to respond in kind.
For example, when you go to a restaurant, greet the maître d' with a warm smile and say something along these lines: "Tonight is a special occasion for us. We would really like the best table available." You'll almost always get a better table than if you entered the restaurant with a demanding look on your face.
Actually, just smiling can often prevent being slighted. If you're standing at a store counter and others are served first, for instance, tell the clerk, "I've been waiting for some time and just want to make sure that you know I'm here."

Be polite and smile when you speak. Smiling tells the other person that dealing with you will be a pleasant experience... that you want to build rapport, not start an argument.
If you have any doubts about the way others perceive your attitude, ask for an honest opinion from a close friend. All too often, we assume that we're polite and put on a pleasant face when we deal with strangers, but that's not always the case, especially in today's often stressful world. The opinion of a good friend can help you see yourself as others do.

age myth and health cost exposed to be wrong

When did longevity become such a bad thing? People are living
longer, yes, but also healthier lives. The healthcare budget is
burgeoning not because we are aging but because everyone is
using the healthcare system more and the treatments are much
more costly. So say the experts. But the myth persists that
aging Boomers will drain the public purse. Read more [

Enjoy a special day

Happy ST Valentines day -

A day for romance and love
- a little background on this important day

But there is no doubt that everyone celebrates February 14th or Valentine's day. Many exchange cards, candy, flowers, and gifts with their loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. The tradition of sending valentines is actually a very old one and I thought it would be entertaining to do a little research on this holiday that speaks to the heart. The oldest known valentine in existence today is a poem sent by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife in 1415 while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. But the beginning of Valentine's Day goes even further back in history.

Pope Gelasius declared February 14th to be St. Valentine's Day around 498 A.D. And during the Middle Ages it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of bird mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February — Valentine's Day — should be a day for romance.

Friends , you might be surprised to know that we can't really verify for certain the real story behind St. Valentine's Day. According to one legend. Valentine was a priest who lived during the third century in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Emperor Claudius decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, and as a result he outlawed marriage for young men. Realizing the injustice of the decree, Valentine defied Claudius and married young lovers in secret. When Valentine's clandestine actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

My favorite legend concerning Valentine is that he actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself, from prison. According to this story, Valentine fell in love with a young girl that may have been his jailor's daughter, who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today.

Friends , while the facts behind the legends of Valentine are far from clear, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no wonder that Valentine's Day caught on as a day of sharing love and romance. However you decide to spend this day, I hope that you are doing something that warms your heart. Happy Valentine's Day!

Integrity, family values and a Pope that "leads"and shines by example

Pope speaks out against child abuse

VATICAN CITY (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI said Monday from Vatican City he condemns violence against children, particularly acts of abuse committed within the Catholic Church.

The Italian news agency ANSA said the pope made his comments during an assembly of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Family and Benedict said acts of abuse within the church violated basic principles of Christianity.

"Over the centuries the church, following in Christ's footsteps, has promoted the protection of the dignity and rights of minors,'' the pope said.

''Unfortunately, there have been several cases in which its members have acted against this commitment and violated the rights (of children)," Benedict added.

The pope also took time Monday to address the impact that family problems such as divorce can have on children, ANSA reported.

"Divisions between parents, particularly separation and divorce, are not without consequences for children,'' Benedict said.

"Children want to be loved by a mother and a father that love one another,'' he added.

More on the Knights renewal quest and process - " leaving no one behind "

To build a better organization selling renewal is a constant necessity
( Fact If you stop growing , you start dying - SH )

Think of it this way, you're not simply selling a product or service. You are selling the potential client on making a change. Robert Potter writes, "There are predictable stages that companies go through in order to change. As a salesperson, you need to be aware of these. Companies decide to change in three stages:

Stage 1: Awareness and assessment (Motivation). At this stage the insight they have is this: There's a good reason to abandon our current way of doing things.

Stage 2: Solutions search (Vision). The insight the company or group has: There is a much better way of doing things.

Stage 3: Evaluation and choice (Path to resolution). Insight: There is a safe and reliable way to get there.

As a person, you have to build the case that the old way needs to be abandoned. You need to ask them why they want to look at changing. Then you can move to your solution. See, if they are not committed to change, they'll never buy your solution.

Good questions to ask potential members or customers as they're considering a change include the following:

-- Who will be affected the most by this change?

-- Why are you even considering the change?

-- Who will be the most vocal in opposing this solution?

-- Who can sabotage or undercut this initiative?

-- What happens if you do nothing?

-- When will you decide on whether or not you're even going to make a change?

-- Is there a champion for this?

-- Whom does he or she have to sell internally?

-- What are their likely objections?

-- Who's going to sell the solution to the other stakeholders or participants ?

-- How are you selling it to the stakeholders or participants?

-- Where are you going to need help?

Sales cycles are longer in a complex sale because you are selling change and not just products or services. The change affects more people in the company or urganization than the decision makers, and the decision makers often have to sell the others on their decision so there's buy-in for change. You need to ask questions about the change and not simply about the problem. Then and only then can you sell solutions -short or long term

A monk's lesson on forgiveness

What Are You Still Carrying?

"If you are angry, don't sin by nursing your grudge. Don't let the sun go down with you still angry—get over it quickly; for when you are angry you give a mighty foothold to the devil."1

The story or legend is told how two monks, when traveling back to their monastery in inclement weather, came to the fjord of a river. There they met a young woman who was afraid to cross the river. Seeing her dilemma one of the monks offered to carry her across the river on his back which offer she accepted.

Later that evening the monk who didn't help the young lady accused the monk who did of breaking the rules of their monastic order. "You know we are to have no dealings with the opposite sex," he said, "and you were wrong in doing what you did."

To which the other monk quietly replied, "I carried her only across the river. You are carrying her still."

When we fail to resolve our anger, and keep nursing our grudges, we not only give a "mighty foothold to the devil," but we also hurt ourselves, damage our physical well-being, and do serious harm to our close relationships. As another has said, when we nurse our grudges and fail to forgive those who have hurt us, "It's like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die."

So, is there anything you are still carrying? Any grudges, resentments, bitterness, hurts, unresolved grief? If so, I urge you to follow the advice of the Scriptures and resolve these issues right away. And, if necessary, see a qualified counselor to help you to do so. Your health and relationships depend on it.

Keep it simple and enjoy life

Livin' Can Be Easy - 10 Simple Steps to Live Simply

Like most of us these days, it seems to be more and more difficult to take time out to smell the roses along the way. The days are so full, it's hard enough to manage the things we have to do, let alone find time for ourselves.

Here are a few tips that may help simplify things a bit for you:

1. Cease the clutter - Having too much stuff requires energy and time to maintain and can be a huge drain on your energy level. Consider letting go of the items either by donating, discarding or selling.

2. Say goodbye to catalogs - Do you really need all those catalogs coming in? Tear off your mailing label, attach to an index card and write, "please remove me from your list" and mail to catalog holders.

3. Eliminate junk mail - Request to be "removed" from any list by writing your name and address and sending to: Mail Preference Service, DMA, PO Box 9008, Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008

4. Stop credit card offers - Call Trans Union at (888) 567-8688. Opt out for two years, or permanently. Since they share information with Experian and Equifax, you do not have to duplicate your request.

5. Automatic billing - Notify your individual creditors or go directly to your banking institution to set up automatic withdrawals monthly.

6. Consolidate debt - Devise a plan to attach that debt! Consolidate all your credit cards to make one payment. Come up with a budget. Talk to a financial advisor. Take the steps necessary to face your debt head on - it's a huge stress factor and emotional drain, but once addressed, you will start to feel better.

7. Prioritize projects - Make a list of what needs to be done first and the time frames for completion. Conquer the little ones first so you can begin to reap the rewards of satisfaction to keep you motivated. Remember, baby steps first!

8. Reduce information overload - What magazine and newspaper subscription can you cut back on? Give your brain a break. Consider cutting down and focusing on just what you need to find out - this pertains to Web surfing, as well.

9. Be spontaneous - Being spontaneous once in a while can be a good thing. Releasing a little control can energize you and raise your spirits. It's a great way to break the everyday routine and add a little fun into your life again.

10. Find peace - Having a place to go to for your down time is important. Find a spot that you feel at peace and can relate to as your own private sanctuary., Mediate, have a cup of tea or simply do nothing. Just relax.

On change and renewal in life - if we stop growing we start dying

If the Horse Is Dead, Dismount   - get used to the facts of life and get over it quickly

"When a thing grows weak and out of date, it is obviously soon going to disappear."1

I recall vividly what a good friend said about her church after she had been away for almost a year because of ill health. She was older so I could understand why she reacted the way she did regarding the new-style music in her church. She was very upset and said that the new group "just couldn't quite make it in Las Vegas." Unfortunately my friend died soon after from cancer. But the conflict regarding music in the church hasn't quite died—yet!

Today, however, I'm not talking about church music. What I am addressing is the need to change when change is necessary. According to Rick Warren, pastor of the Saddleback Community church and author of the book, The Purpose Driven Church, the reason that 95% of all churches in the world never grow past 300 members is because their structure keeps them from growing beyond that point. Quoting today's scripture, he said, "When a thing grows weak and out of date, it is obviously soon going to disappear. That's true of churches, too. If a church cannot change, it will eventually die."

This same principle applies to many areas of life. No, we don't want to make changes where change is not to our advantage, but there are times when we do need to make changes. When it comes to communicating the gospel, while the message itself never changes, our way and means of communicating it have to change in order to communicate effectively to the particular group we are addressing. One size doesn't fit all!

Also, whether we approve or disapprove, many things around us change and if we don't adapt, we get left behind. For instance, marriage partner roles have changed drastically from the days of our parents and grandparents. If a husband still interprets being the head of the home as being the family dictator, he will be doomed for failure (at least here in America and other parts of the world as well). Those old ways (which, by the way, were a misinterpretation of the Bible), have "gone with the wind."

A few years back, Moody Monthly, the highly respected Christian magazine, discontinued its publication after its 103-year history. Why? Because of the economy, the proliferation of Christian magazines, and because of technology. Moody Monthly, like so many other ministries, has had to turn from printed hard copy to electronic means of communication, not only to become more effective in their ministry, but also to survive.

So whether it is in our professional or personal life, let's be open to and willing to change where change is both essential and necessary.

10 Commandments of Marriage - remember it is all about the truth and the consequences

Smile -take a deep breath -and remember that every day is a gift

10 Commandments of Marriage - remember it is all about truth and consequences
Commandment 1.
Marriages are made in heaven. But so again, are thunder and lightning.

Commandment 2.
If you want your spouse to listen and pay strict attention to every word you say, talk in your sleep.

Commandment 3.
Marriage is grand -- and divorce is at least 100 grand!

Commandment 4.
Married life is very frustrating. In the first year of marriage, the man speaks and the woman listens. In the second year, the woman speaks and the man listens. In the third year, they both speak and the neighbors listen.

Commandment 5.
When a man opens the door of his car for his wife, you can be sure of one thing: Either the car is new or the wife is.

Commandment 6.
Marriage is when a man and woman become as one; the trouble starts when they try to decide which one.

Commandment 7.
Before marriage, a man will lie awake all night thinking about something you said. After marriage, he will fall asleep before you finish talking.

Commandment 8.
Every man wants a wife who is beautiful, understanding, economical, and a good cook. But the law allows only one wife.

Commandment 9.
Every woman wants a man who is handsome, understanding, economical and a considerate lover, but again, the law allows only one husband.

Commandment 10.
Man is incomplete until he marries. After that, he is finished.

THE SHOE BOMBER- it is right and just

Remember the guy who got on a plane with a bomb built into his shoe
and tried to light it?
Did you know his trial is over?
Did you know he was sentenced?
Did you see/hear any of the judge's comments on TV or Radio?
  Didn't think so.!!!
Everyone should hear what the judge had to say.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ruling by Judge William Young, US District Court.

Prior to sentencing, the Judge asked the defendant if he had anything
to say.  His response: After admitting his guilt to the court for the
record, Reid also admitted his 'allegiance to Osama bin Laden, to
Islam, and to the religion of Allah,' defiantly stating, 'I think I
will not apologize for my actions,' and told the court 'I am at war
with your country.'

Judge Young then delivered the statement quoted below:

January 30, 2003, United States vs. Reid.

Judge Young:

"Mr. Richard C. Reid, hearken now to the sentence the
Court imposes upon you.

On counts 1, 5 and 6 the Court sentences you to life in prison in the
custody of the United States Attorney General.  On counts 2, 3, 4 and
7, the Court sentences you to 20 years in prison on each count, the
sentence on each count to run consecutively.  (That's 80 years.)

On count 8 the Court sentences you to the mandatory 30 years again, to
be served consecutively to the 80 years just imposed.  The Court
imposes upon you for each of the eight counts a fine of $250,000
that's an aggregate fine of $2 million.  The Court accepts the
government's recommendation with respect to restitution and orders
restitution in the amount of $298.17 to Andre Bousquet and $5,784 to
American Airlines.

The Court imposes upon you an $800 special assessment. The Court
imposes upon you five years supervised release simply because the law
requires it. But the life sentences are real life sentences so I need
go no further.

This is the sentence that is provided for by our statutes.  It is a
fair and just sentence.  It is a righteous sentence.

Now, let me explain this to you.  We are not afraid of you or any of
your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid.  We are Americans.  We have
been through the fire before.  There is too much war talk here and I
say that to everyone with the utmost respect.  Here in this court, we
deal with individuals as individuals and care for individuals as
individuals.  As human beings, we reach out for justice.

You are not an enemy combatant.  You are a terrorist. You are not a
soldier in any war.  You are a terrorist.  To give you that reference,
to call you a soldier, gives you far too much stature. Whether the
officers of government do it or your attorney does it, or if you think
you are a soldier, you are not----- you are a terrorist.  And we do
not negotiate with terrorists.  We do not meet with terrorists.  We do
not sign documents with terrorists.  We hunt them down one by one and
bring them to justice.

So war talk is way out of line in this court.  You are a big fellow.
But you are not that big.  You're no warrior.  I've known warriors.
You are a terrorist.  A species of criminal that is guilty of multiple
attempted murders.  In a very real sense, State Trooper Santiago had
it right when you first were taken off that plane and into custody and
you wondered where the press and the TV crews were, and he said:
'You're no big deal.'

You are no big deal.

What your able counsel and what the equally able United States
attorneys have grappled with and what I have as honestly as I know how
tried to grapple with, is why you did something so horrific.  What was
it that led you here to this courtroom today?

I have listened respectfully to what you have to say. And I ask you to
search your heart and ask yourself what sort of unfathomable hate led
you to do what you are guilty and admit you are guilty of doing?  And,
I have an answer for you.  It may not satisfy you, but as I search
this entire record, it comes as close to understanding as I know.

It seems to me you hate the one thing that to us is most precious. You
hate our freedom.  Our individual freedom.  Our individual freedom to
live as we choose, to come and go as we choose, to believe or not
believe as we individually choose.  Here, in this society, the very
wind carries freedom.  It carries it everywhere from sea to shining
sea.  It is because we prize individual freedom so much that you are
here in this beautiful courtroom, so that everyone can see, truly see,
that justice is administered fairly, individually, and discretely.  It
is for freedom's sake that your lawyers are striving so vigorously on
your behalf, have filed appeals, will go on in their representation of
you before other judges.

We Americans are all about freedom.  Because we all know that the way
we treat you, Mr. Reid, is the measure of our own liberties.  Make no
mistake though.  It is yet true that we will bear any burden; pay any
price, to preserve our freedoms.  Look around this courtroom.  Mark it
well.  The world is not going to long remember what you or I say here.
The day after tomorrow, it will be forgotten, but this, however, will
long endure.

Here in this courtroom and courtrooms all across America , the
American people will gather to see that justice, individual justice,
justice, not war, individual justice is in fact being done.  The very
President of the United States through his officers will have to come
into courtrooms and lay out evidence on which specific matters can be
judged and juries of citizens will gather to sit and judge that
evidence democratically, to mold and shape and refine our sense of
justice.

See that flag, Mr. Reid?  That's the flag of the United States of
America .  That flag will fly there long after this is all forgotten.
That flag stands for freedom.  And it always will.
Mr. Custody Officer.  Stand him down."

So, how much of this Judge's comments did we hear on our TV sets?  We
need more judges like Judge Young.  Pass this around.  Everyone should
and needs to hear what this fine judge had to say. Powerful words that
strike home
..
