Poll: Most say Christmas a religious day
ASBURY PARK, N.J. (UPI) -- An overwhelming majority of Americans celebrate Christmas, and most of those who do say they consider it a religious celebration, a poll indicates.A telephone survey found 92 percent of U.S. adults celebrate Christmas in their family, Rasmussen Reports said Thursday.
Of those who celebrate the holiday, almost two-thirds say they regard it as a religious occasion despite the strong secular, commercial overtones, the poll found.
Of those who say they're not celebrating Christmas, 25 percent say they observe some other holiday like Hanukkah, while 66 percent of those who say they do not celebrate Christmas say they do not celebrate any holiday at this time of year.
Americans generally rate Christmas as the nation's most important holiday, closely followed by the Fourth of July, Rasmussen Reports said.
The survey of 1,000 adults nationwide was conducted on December 4-5, 2010 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
