Renewal -to change or not to change

1. To Change or Not to Change

"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love."1 "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good."2

You've undoubtedly read about Swiss watchmakers who, for many years, dominated the world market for watchmaking.

"The Swiss made the best watches in the world and were committed to constant refinement of their expertise. It was the Swiss who came forward with the minute hand and the second hand. They led the world in discovering better ways to manufacture the gears, bearings, and mainsprings of watches. They even led the way in waterproofing techniques and self-winding models. By 1968, the Swiss made 65 percent of all watches sold in the world and laid claim to as much as 90 percent of the profits.

"By 1980, however, they had laid off thousands of watch-makers and controlled less than 10 percent of the world market. Their profit domination dropped to less than 20 percent. Between 1979 and 1981, fifty thousand of the sixty-two thousand Swiss watchmakers lost their jobs. Why? The Swiss had refused to consider a new development"3—the development of the digital watch.

Some time ago I wrote a Daily Encounter with the title, "If the Horse is Dead, Dismount." Some readers felt that I was suggesting that we change much of what we were doing in the church for change's sake. I was not suggesting this at all. What I was saying was we needed to make changes in our methodology where what we were doing was no longer effective. The Swiss were right in that watches were still needed. Their mistake was that they weren't open to adding a new method for watchmaking.

Years ago when I was a director of a youth organization and started changing our method of reaching teens with the gospel, I was told that my methods weren't acceptable. I was given an ultimatum—either I stayed with the "accepted ways" of doing things or get out. I chose the latter. And that's how and why ACTS International was founded. (To be perfectly honest I would never have had the courage to start my own organization had I not been "pushed out" of the one I was with.) For the next three decades I majored in publishing outreach literature which has been distributed to more than 40 million people around the world—and is still being distributed by our offices in Australia and, until recently, in New Zealand.

However, here in North America, with the revolution of electronic communications via E-mail and the Internet, had I not been willing to change my methodology once again, my work here would be dead. I haven't changed the message—just changed the way of communicating it.

Let us learn a lesson from the Swiss watchmakers. If we need to change our methods to be more effective in what we are doing, let's be willing to make and implement the necessary changes.

At the opposite end of the scale, where even some churches and Christians are making changes just to be politically correct and are thus accepting behaviors that are drastically opposed to what the Word of God teaches—let us, as the Apostle Paul advised, stand firm in the faith and in harmony with the Word of God regardless of what the secular world thinks or the media promotes.

Understanding a Woman's Language - Satire or wit for exploring the other side

blogo1charitynumber.jpgMen -what does it really mean? 3 self help Lessons

Understanding a Woman's Language - a concise compass guide for your better understanding -pass it on

Lesson 1 What does it really mean when your women says...........

"Fine" - This is the word we use at the end of any argument that we feel we are right about but need to shut you up. NEVER use fine to describe how a woman looks. This will cause you to have one of those arguments.

"Five minutes" - This is half an hour. It is equivalent to the five minutes that your football game is going to last before you take out the trash, so it's an even trade.

"Nothing" - This means something and you should be on your toes. "Nothing" is usually used to describe the feeling a woman has of wanting to turn you inside out, upside down, and backwards. "Nothing" usually signifies an argument that will last "Five Minutes" and end with the word "Fine".

"Go Ahead" (with raised eyebrows) - This is a dare. One that will result in a woman getting upset over "Nothing" and will end with the word "Fine".

"Go Ahead" (normal eyebrows) - This means "I give up" or "do what you want because I don't care". You will get a raised eyebrow "Go ahead" in just a few minutes, followed by "Nothing" and "Fine" and she will talk to you in about "Five Minutes" when she cools off.
Lesson 2  More on Understanding a Woman's Language

(loud sigh) - This is not actually a word, but is still often a verbal statement very misunderstood by men. She thinks you are an idiot at that moment and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you over "Nothing".

(soft sigh) - Again, not a word, but a verbal statement. "Soft sighs" are one of the few things that some men actually understand. She is content. Your best bet is to not move or breathe and she will stay content.

"Oh" - This word followed by any statement is trouble. Example; "Oh, let me get that". Or, "Oh, I talked to him about what you were doing last night." If she says "Oh" before a statement, RUN, do not walk, to the nearest exit. She will tell you that she is "Fine" when she is done tossing your clothes out the window, but do not expect her to talk to you for at least 2 days. "Oh" as the lead to a sentence usually signifies that you are caught in a lie. Do not try to lie more to get out of it, or you will get raised eyebrows "Go ahead" followed by acts so unspeakable that we can't bring ourselves to write about them.

Lesson 3  Even More on Understanding a Woman's Language
"That's Okay" - This is one of the most dangerous statements that a woman can say to a man. "That's Okay" means that she wants to think long and hard before paying you retributions for what ever it is that you have done. "That's Okay" is often used with the word "Fine" and used in conjunction with a raised eyebrow "Go ahead". At some point in the near future when she has plotted and planned, you are going to be in some mighty big trouble.

"Please Do" - This is not a statement, it is an offer. A woman is giving you the chance to come up with whatever excuse or reason you have for doing whatever it is that you have done. You have a fair chance to tell the truth, so be careful and you shouldn't get a "That's Okay".

"Thanks" - A woman is thanking you. Do not faint; just say you're welcome.

"Thanks a lot" - This is much different from "Thanks". A woman will say, "Thanks a lot" when she is really ticked off at you. It signifies that you have hurt her in some callous way, and will be followed by the "Loud Sigh". Be careful not to ask what is wrong after the "Loud Sigh", as she will only tell you "Nothing".

Lead by example is still worthwhile and leads to success

Example is Still the Best Teacher
Zig Ziglar
This event, recalled by a missionary's daughter, took place many years ago: "To celebrate the coming of Christian missionaries to a region of Zaire, a day-long event was filled with speeches, testimonies and music.

"That rally is best remembered for the way it ended. A very old man came before the crowd and insisted he be allowed to speak. He said his death was imminent, and if he did not speak now, the information he carried might never be known. He explained that when missionaries first came a century ago, his people did not trust them. They were unusual and had a strange message.

"The tribal leaders decided to test the missionaries by slowly boiling them to death. Over the months and years that followed, these tribesmen witnessed the fashion in which death and grief were handled by the missionary families. The old man said, 'It was as we watched how they died that we decided that we wanted to live as Christians.'

"The story was unknown for a hundred years. Those who died painful, strange deaths were never certain why they were dying or what impact their lives would have. Through it all, though, they stayed and preached their strange message." -- Leith Anderson ("Preaching Today," tape 126)

Follow this example of consistency to influence others, and you'll have something to smile about yourself, and so will countless others.

Fwd: Clifford Olson gets seniors' benefits

Personally I think this is outrageous and an insult to good governance practise. If you agree sign the petition and pass it on    Intuitively speaking -rewarding killers at the public expense of needy seniors or those on fixed disabilty pensions can not be right   Sieg

Dear Supporter,

The CTF has learned that 70-year-old Clifford Olson – a notorious serial child killer – has been collecting Old Age Security (OAS) and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) payments to pad his bank account while serving multiple life sentences in prison. These income support programs are meant to help seniors make ends meet, not for prisoners who already live off the government dime.

And it's not just Clifford Olson.  Under current rules, every convict over the age of 65 is eligible to apply for OAS and GIS payments.

SIGN THE PETITION OPPOSING THIS TRAVESTY

With over 500 prisoners in federal jails over the age of 65, this perk costs taxpayers over $7 million, every year.

Human Resources Minister, Diane Finley, has taken notice of Olson and his OAS and GIS collecting prison buddies and has committed to look into the situation.  Let's show her that Canadians want action now.  Support and pressure from thousands of you, your family and friends can make the difference.

Step 1: Sign the petition asking Minister Finley to ban prisoners like Clifford Olson from getting these payments.

Step 2: Forward this e-mail to everyone in your address book and encourage all of them to sign the petition too.

CLICK HERE TO SIGN THE PETITION NOW

Thanks for all your help,

What does service mean - a enlightenment smile

The Meaning of Service
At one time in my life, I thought I had a handle on the meaning of the word "service."

"It's the act of doing things for other people." Then I heard these terms which reference the word service:

Internal Revenue Service
Postal Service
Telephone Service
Civil Service
City & County Public Service
Customer Service
Service Stations

Then I became confused about the word "service." This is not what I thought "service" meant.

So today, I overheard two farmers talking, and one of them said he had hired a bull to "service" a few of his cows. Suddenly, it all came into perspective. Now I understand what all those "service" agencies are all about.

I hope you now are as enlightened as I am.

For those that do not have office -here are some useful free tools

Some hot link options and tips for those that cannot load files

It is always useful to have programs that make your computer useful. Try the following free resources to make the experience more productive if you do not have Microsoft office .

Try google.com > setup free mail account and use Documents ( useoffline option ) and explore the other features.

(OpenOffice.org is a free office-suite replacement for Microsoft Office; it can be downloaded from http://www.openoffice.org and can be recommended for people not wanting to buy a copy of Microsoft Office. But OpenOffice.org's Impress presentation module, while Powerpoint-compatible, is as complex to learn and use as Powerpoint).

Irfanview is a very useful free utility for working with digital photos and other computer graphics. It can be downloaded from http://www.irfanview.com. (Note that it is only available in a version for Microsoft Windows). I find it very useful for resizing, cropping, coverting, and other basic graphics functions, but I'm not going to go into them here. A more general tutorial can be found at: http://www.rams-es.eu.dodea.edu/online/Irfanview/IrFanview%20Tutorial/IrfanView%20Tutorial/container.htm

The lion and lambs of fundraising from the sales manual

Greetings! Earning more -means more community charity support

Of all the reality shows on TV, the one that actually has some value other than mindless entertainment is Celebrity Apprentice. I made a point to watch the premier last week, and saw a couple of very important sales lessons in action.

The teams of celebrities were divided, men versus women. Their task was to see who could raise more money for charity by taking over a diner for an afternoon and sell food.

The men's team raised twice as much money as the women, despite the women having a better location in Manhattan. There are two reasons why:

1. Selling at a higher price. The men set prices for hamburgers at $100 -- plus more if you wanted truffles. The women set their price at $10 for a hamburger. Cyndi Lauper, the women's team leader said that the common person couldn't pay a lot for a hamburger. Trump pointed out in the Boardroom that the common person was not the market she should have been going after.

Sales point: the sales reps in companies who consistently have the largest average order size are the ones selling the higher priced and higher margin items, and selling at full price. No revelation there, right? They go after the bigger orders. What are you gong after?

2. Prospect targeting and calling. The men's team contacted more heavy hitters -- big donors -- than the women's team. Led by former baseball player Darryl Strawberry who has many New York contacts, the men were able to bring in the big dogs who not only could donate the $100 for hamburgers, but also left $1000-$2000 tips for charity. The men's tips also were much more than the women's.

Also, as a result of targeting the mass market, the women had a long line of potential customers still waiting as time expired on the contest -- some of whom were potential larger donors. Yet, they were so busy with the small customers they did not have time to sell to the bigger, more profitable ones. Sound familiar?

Sales point: Where are you selling within an organization? Too many sales reps start low with middle managers who can't make an ultimate decision, or can't make a large purchase.

Church renewal and how our pope is providing real leadership by leading

When doing nothing is not an option -real action ,not lip service is needed to fix the issue and make the body whole again to its true core values. The rot, decay , must be identified , acknowledged and removed to ensure that the good or vitality of the body be  restored . I personally believe that our Pope is showing true leadership in this regard. " As Christ chased out the money lenders from the temple - so should the Pope chase out the clergy who abuse their trust." S. Holle comment and opinion .

"My hope is that it will help in the process of repentance, healing and renewal," Benedict said

Pope approves handling of German scandal

VATICAN CITY (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI approves of measures the Roman Catholic Church in Germany is adopting to handle clergy sex abuse scandals, a church leader said.

Nineteen of Germany's 27 dioceses have been affected by scandal, with similar situations reported recently in dioceses in Ireland, the Netherlands and Austria, ANSA reported Saturday.

The German arm of the church plans to provide more support for victims and to tighten procedures in an effort to "bring truth to light," Monsignor Robert Zollitsch said Friday after briefing the German-born pope.

"He is favorable to our measures but we do not know whether they will be extended to other countries," Zollitsch said.

In the United States, several dioceses have been bankrupted by settlements since sex abuse by clergy was first exposed on a major scale in the late 1990s.

Cardinal Christopher Schoenborn, archbishop of Vienna, wrote this week the church needs to examine how priests are trained, now the "so-called sexual revolution" has affected the church and the doctrine of celibacy.

The church only mandated celibacy for its priests in the 12th century and Eastern Rite priests are still allowed to marry. A number of married Protestant ministers who converted to Catholicism have been allowed to function as priests.

Pope urges Irish to forgive abuse

VATICAN CITY, Italy (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI Saturday asked Irish Catholics to forgive sexual abuse by priests as allegations of similar abuse increased in a half-dozen countries.

"My hope is that it will help in the process of repentance, healing and renewal," Benedict said of his pastoral letter, the first public statement by the Vatican on the sexual abuse of Irish children dating back decades.

Allegations of clergy sexual abuse have increased in recent days in Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Brazil and the pope's native Germany, CNN reported Saturday.

The crisis threatened to further erode membership in Europe's Roman Catholic churches but have less of an impact in Asia and Africa, where the church is growing, said David Gibson, a Vatican expert and author of a biography of Pope Benedict.

When the pope was archbishop of Munich, church officials ignored repeated warnings from a church-hired psychoanalyst to keep a molesting priest away from children, the BBC reported. The psychoanalyst said he did not believe the pope was ever aware the priest had been returned to service in a parish.

Pride and SBL or AMDG -food for thought

"J. S. Bach became known worldwide for his remarkable musical talent, but he never ceased to credit his Creator as the one who was responsible for his ability. The pages of his musical compositions could well have been used to satisfy a personal pride as his name appeared on them. But he was determined to give glory to God for his accomplishments. So he always concluded his original compositions with the three letters INS. They stood for the Latin words meaning 'In the name of Christ.' At other times Bach began his score with the letters JJ, meaning 'Jesus help', and then ended his composition with the letters SDG for the Latin Solo Deo Gloria, meaning, 'To God be the glory.'"2

The problem of pride is as old as mankind … actually it's older, for it was Satan's downfall. "I will make myself like the Most High [God],"3 he declared. It has also been the downfall of many a man. "Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall,"4 warned King Solomon.

It's so easy to forget that all that we are and have comes from God—"For in him we live and move and have our being"5—and yet so many of us act as if we were the creator of our talents, the maker of our abilities, and the master of our tomorrows—none of which is true.

On the other hand, humility is not putting yourself down. True humility is acknowledging what gifts we have, abilities we possess, and accomplishments we have achieved—but all the while, like Bach, gratefully acknowledging Solo Deo Gloria—to God be the glory.

Canadian Taxpayers Federation
We won!

Yesterday we sent an urgent appeal to contact federal lawmakers in an effort to pass an opposition motion to end "ten per centers" – the practice that allows MPs to send partisan junk mail outside their ridings.

Thanks to you, the vote passed yesterday afternoon in the House of Commons 140-137. Click here to see how your MP voted.

It's even better than that.

The motion also calls for reduced partisan advertising, ministerial use of aircraft, hiring of external 'consultants' and a smaller cabinet and prime minister's office. This could save taxpayers $1 billion annually.

But we're not out of the woods yet.

The motion now goes to the Board of Internal Economy – a closed-door cabal of MPs from all parties that decide matters of Parliamentary perks and privileges.

We'll advise you before this committee meets so we can demand this important motion be honoured.

In the meantime, take a bow. We have ended an offensive partisan perk and saved a few trees in the process. Congratulations!

Wisdom on making someone special with a smile - works when you are recruiting new members or selling to customers

Be real and sincere with people if you want to be effective in your effort  . Here are a few other sales points at work in this "personalized smile " Event.

DON'T DISMISS SOMEONE AS UNIMPORTANT. Or not qualified to buy. You never know who you're talking to. Especially on incoming calls. I've seen plenty of sales reps mentally disqualify a prospect by just looking at a name on a reply card or computer screen. When I was waiting for the takeout order I might have looked like I was applying for a busboy job, but still received VIP treatment.

THE LAW OF RECIPROCATION. In the book I consider the "bible" of persuasion, "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, by Robert B. Cialdini, the author spends an entire chapter talking about the Reciprocation Rule that our culture follows, which states, "We should repay, in kind, what another person has provided us."

He further says "that because there is a general societal distaste for people who take and make no effort to give in return, we will often go to great lengths to avoid being considered a moocher, ingrate, or welsher." After all, who hasn't sent holiday cards to someone because you received one from them? Or have you ever bought something in a grocery store simply because you tried the sample from the nice lady handing it out and felt obligated to stick one in your cart?

GIVE A LITTLE AND MAYBE GET A LOT. I don't advocate lowering price to sweeten a deal, but how about giving away something that is low cost to you, but high value for someone else? Little things mean a lot. Extending the terms on someone's warranty or subscription, giving valuable printed how-to information ? anything with a high profit margin that could have tremendous impact. It can get customers, and keep them buying.

BE CARE-FULL. Or, full of care. You need to CARE about a prospect or customer to truly make an impact. I was giving some instruction to an underperforming sales rep after a call, and he told me, "You're assuming I care about them." No coaching will help that attitude. In my example, I watched someone  care about all the customers he talked to. I personally saw it in his eyes and felt it in his voice. There's a different motivator there. On the phone, your care must come through in your voice.

Yes sir, try a nice investment of about 50 cents, a coffee and your personal touch with a smile , brotherts .. Lots of people get a return on that one. And there was not a smart phone or laptop involved. It was the ultimate in "social media"--talking to and caring about a customer.
SH   ( technology is not an excuse for not being human , caring or real to others )

Fwd: MP Junk Mail Vote Tomorrow

Subject: MP Junk Mail Vote Tomorrow
To: backtoeden.ontario@gmail.com

Dear supporter,

Tomorrow, March 16, all Members of Parliament will vote on a motion to end the most offensive aspect of MP junk mail.

Known as "ten percenters" in Ottawa, the CTF has long stood against this wasteful and abusive practice, particularly when MPs mail partisan propaganda to constituents that aren't even their own!  All at taxpayers' expense of course.

Last week at a national press conference the CTF awarded the junk mail sent by our federal politicians its federal Teddy award for government waste.

This motion is being put forward by the Opposition. Rumour has it that the Bloc are also poised to support the motion.  It is imperative that members of the Conservative and NDP caucus support this motion as well to ensure its passage.  Please send an e-mail to the NDP and Conservative (A to F, H to O, P to Z caucuses urging them to end these junk mailers.  Alternatively, you can contact the leaders of all four parties (Conservative, Liberal, NDP, Bloc) as well as your own MP urging them to support the same.

It's more than just the few million in savings.  It's the symbolic recognition that our elected officials – of all parties – stop using our tax dollars for silly partisanship at a time we're going into debt $134-million a day.
