Long-term care plan is short-sighted - Brantford Expositor - Ontario, CA

Long-term care plan is short-sighted - Brantford Expositor - Ontario, CA

This is disgraceful.
In many ways we have a wonderful health system. We have skilled doctors and caring nurses who go the extra mile for patients.

Sadly, to access that care, patients often have to negotiate a bureaucratic nightmare of red tape.
The government has downloaded responsibility for health spending to these faceless LHINs.
At the very time when our parents and grandparents most need their loved ones around them, they are shipped off to an unfamiliar place to die among strangers.
People who have lived and worked all their lives in communities such as these should be allowed the dignity of being cared for close to the family, close to those who love them, in their final days.

This is a heartless bureaucracy gone crazy. You can't ship frail old people out of town just so you can balance the books. christina.blizzard@sunmedia.ca

SO Brothers what are we going to do about it ?? Helping those in need is one of our prime mandates . How would you solve this ? Suggestions welcome .

Excellent letter! on being Canadian- based on merit rather then entitlement

Just remember, when you see someone at the top of a mountain......

They didn't fall there!"

- Paul H. Dunn

A  Letter to the Editor (excellent letter)
So  many letter writers have explained how this land  is made up of immigrants. Maybe we should  turn to our history books and point out to  people why today's Canadian is not willing to  accept the new kind of immigrant any  longer.

Back  in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas  of Europe to  come to Canada,  people had to get off a ship and stand in a long  line in Halifax and be documented.  Some would even get down on their hands and  knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to  uphold the laws and support their new  country in good and bad times. They made  learning English a primary rule in their new  Canadian households and some even changed  their names to blend in with their new  home. They had waved good bye to their  birth place to give their children a  new life and did everything in their power  to help their children  assimilate into one  culture.

Nothing  was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare,  no labour laws to protect them. All  they had were the skills, craftsmanship and  desire they had brought with them to trade  for a future of  prosperity.

Most  of their children came of age when World War II  broke out. Canadians fought along side men  whose parents had come straight over from  Germany, Italy, France, Japan, Czechoslovakia,  Russia,Sweden,Poland and so many other  places. None of these first  generation Canadians ever gave any thought  about what country their parents had come  from. They were Canadians fighting Hitler,  Mussolini and the Emperor  of Japan.  They were defending the Freedom as one  people. When we  liberated France,  no-one in those villages was looking for  the Ukrainian-Canadian or the  German-Canadian or the Irish-Canadian. The  people of France saw only  Canadians.

And  we carried one flag that represented our  country. Not one of those immigrant sons  would have thought about picking up  another country's flag and waving it to  represent who they were. It would have been  a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed  so much to be here. These immigrants truly  knew what it meant to be a Canadian. They  stirred the melting pot into one red and white  bowl.

And  here we are in 2010 with a new kind of immigrant  who wants the same rights and privileges.  Only they want to achieve it by  playing with a different set of rules, one  that includes a Canadian passport and a  guarantee of being faithful to their mother  country. I'm sorry, that's not what being a  Canadian is all about. Canadians have  been very open-hearted and open-minded  regarding immigrants, whether they were  fleeing poverty, dictatorship, persecution, or  whatever else makes us think of those  aforementioned immigrants who truly  did ADOPT our country, and our flag and our  morals and our customs. And left their  wars, hatred, and divisions behind. I believe  that the immigrants who landed  in Canada in  the early 1900s deserve better than that  for the toil, hard work and sacrifice those  legally searching for a better life. I  think they would be appalled that they are  being used as an example by those waving  foreign country flags, fighting foreign  battles on our soil, making Canadians change to  suit their religions and cultures, and  wanting to change our countries fabric by  claiming discrimination when we do not give in  to their  demands.

Its  about time we get real and stand up for our  forefathers rights, we are CANADIAN Lest we  forget it!!! I am a Native of this  Country & proud of  it!

           NO MORE POLITICAL  CORRECTNESS
NO  MORE not saying MERRY  CHRISTMAS !!! in stores and our  schools!
I  Want my Canada of  birth BACK  !!!

P.S.  -- Please pass this on to everyone you  know!!!
             KEEP THIS LETTER  MOVING!!

Hope  this letter is read by millions of people all  across Canada!!!

The money was used to fund Kopczyk's salary and to offset some overhead costs.
The Yes Church has opened its doors to the program for four years. The floor in a wing on the lower level of the church is lined with mattresses covered with sheets and blankets. Drinks and snacks are provided and people are directed to various food programs operating in the city.
"It's not fancy, that's for sure," said Kopczyk of the shelter.
More than 70 people, many of them from the Yes Church, Followers of Christ Church, and Hope Christian Reformed Church, volunteered to set up registration tables, make beds, distribute snacks and clean up each morning.
"We couldn't run the services without them," said Kopczyk, adding that the program will be

 Encouragement and Support

Some time ago an experiment was conducted to measure people's capacity to endure pain. How long could a barefooted person stand in a bucket of ice water? It was discovered that when there was someone else present offering encouragement and support, the person standing in the ice water could tolerate pain twice as long as when no one else was present.1

Most people are aware of who Moses was—the leader of the ancient Israelites who, when leading this young nation out of slavery in Egypt, faced many a battle when conquering the Promised Land given to them by God. In one battle God told Moses that as long as he held his hands heavenward, God would give the Israelites victory over the enemy. If he lowered his hands, the enemy would gain the upper hand. You can imagine how exhausting this would have been for Moses. So, "When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset."2

What was true for Moses is also true for you and me. We all need encouragement and support. This is especially true when we are going through tough times; we need the support of loving friends to hold up our hands.

Jesus Death - 60 seconds to understand

Message from siegholle@gmail.com:

Easter message -remember why we celebrate Easter

Subject:  Jesus Death - 60 seconds to understand

As we prepare for the Holy Week, some contemplation on the following .........

60 seconds with God....   A Rebirth of your spirit

For
the next 60 seconds, set aside whatever
you're doing and take this opportunity! Let's see if Satan
can stop this.

THE (SCIENTIFIC) DEATH OF JESUS

At the age of 33, Jesus was condemned to the death penalty.

At the time crucifixion was the "worst" death. Only the worst
criminals condemned to be crucified. Yet it was
even  more dreadful for Jesus, unlike
other criminals condemned to death by
crucifixion Jesus was to be nailed to the
cross by His hands and feet.

Each nail
was 6 to 8 inches long.

The nails
were driven into His wrist.  Not
into His palms as is commonly
portrayed. There's a tendon in the wrist that
extends to the shoulder.  The Roman guards knew
that when the nails were being hammered into the
wrist that tendon would tear and
break, forcing Jesus to use His back
muscles to support himself so that He could
breathe.

Both of His feet
were nailed together.  Thus He was forced to
support Himself on the single nail that
impaled His feet to the cross.  Jesus could
not support himself with His legs because of the pain
so He was forced to alternate between arching His
back then using his legs just to continue to
breathe. Imagine the struggle, the pain, the
suffering, the courage.

Jesus endured this
reality for over 3 hours.

  Yes,
over 3 hours! Can you imagine this kind of
suffering?  A few minutes before He died,
Jesus stopped bleeding. He was simply pouring water
from his wounds.

[]

From common images
we see wounds to His hands and feet and even the spear wound
to His side.  But do we realize His wounds
were actually made in his body.  A hammer
driving large nails through the wrist, the feet overlapped
and an even large nail hammered through the arches, then a
Roman guard piercing His side with a spear.   But
before the nails and the spear Jesus was whipped and
beaten..  The whipping was so severe that it tore the
flesh from His body..  The beating so horrific that His
face was torn and his beard ripped from His face.  The
crown of thorns cut deeply into His scalp..  Most men
would not have survived this torture.

"

He had no more blood
to bleed out, only water poured from His
wounds.

The
human adult body contains about 3.5 liters
(just less than a gallon) of blood.

Jesus poured all 3.5
liters of his blood; He had three nails hammered into His
members; a crown of  thorns on His head and, beyond
that, a Roman soldier who stabbed a spear into His
chest.

  All these without
mentioning the humiliation He passed after carrying His own
cross for almost 2 kilometers, while the crowd spat in his
face and threw stones (the cross was almost 30 kg of weight,
only for its higher part, where His hands were
nailed).

Jesus had
to endure this experience, so that you can have free
access to God.

So that your sins
could be "washed" away. All of them, with no exception!
Don't ignore this situation.

JESUS
CHRIST DIED FOR YOU!

For you, who now
read this message. Do not believe that He only died for
others (those who go to church or for pastors, bishops,
etc).

He died for you! It
is easy to pass jokes or foolish photos  by message, but
when it comes to God, sometimes you feel ashamed to forward
to others because you are worried of what they may think
about you.

  Accept
the reality, the truth that JESUS IS THE ONLY SALVATION FOR
THE WORLD.

God
has plans for you, show all your friends what He experienced
to save you. Now think about this! May God bless your
life!

60 seconds with God...

For the next 60
seconds, set aside what you're doing and take this opportunity! Let's see if Satan can stop this.

All you have to do
is:

1. Simply pray for the person who sent this message to you:

2.Then, send this message onto others...

3. People will pray for you and you will make that many people pray to God
for other people.

4. Take a moment to appreciate the power of God in your life, for
doing what pleases Him.

If you are not ashamed to do this, please, follow Jesus' instructions.
He said (Matthew 10:32 & 33): "Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge efore My Father in heaven; but whosoever denies Me before others,  I also will deny before My Father in heaven".

If you believe, send this message... But send it only if you believe
that Christ Jesus is your Lord and Savior.

Yes, I love God. He is my source of life and my Savior. He keeps me alive day and night.

Without Him, I am nothing, but with Him "I can do all things through Him
who strengthens me". Philippians 4:13.

This is the simple proof. If you love God and you are a believer and trust
in salvation through Christ Jesus, send this to all those you love.

Happy Easter everyone - a time for family , a time to renew your faith

easter.jpgCelebrate this day with your loved ones and be happy that you are alive ,well and have the rest of your life to enjoy in this living world . Take a few moments with yourself to reflect on why this day is important in history.

A time for reflection - Why Did Jesus Have to Die? (From Innes - The spirtual parchute  )

"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering."1

Today is Good Friday, the day we remember the crucifixion of Jesus Christ who died on an excruciatingly painful Roman cross two thousand years ago. I am sure that many people today ask the same question that a Daily Encounter reader asked: "I understand Jesus died for our sins. I believe it but I just can't understand why he had to do it. Didn't God have power over everything? I have looked for the answer to this question for a long time. Please help."

I'm sure that many people struggle with this same issue so let me explain. Because God is a God of infinite justice, he cannot forgive sin without justice being served. Otherwise he wouldn't be God. This means that all sin must be judged according to the moral law of God and the universe. We can no more defy this law and live than we can defy the law of gravity by jumping out of an airplane without a parachute. The end result will be death unless—unless we apply another law, the law of aerodynamics. This law makes it possible for an airplane to fly and a parachute to lower us to the earth gradually and thereby save us.

There is another universal law that we cannot defy and live. It is "the law of sin and death," which means that the judgment and penalty of all sin is death and eternal separation from God. That is, unless we apply a higher law which is "the law of the Spirit of Life," which is a God-given "spiritual parachute" to save us from eternal death. God provided this law through the death of Jesus who died in our place to pay the penalty for our sin.

Furthermore, because God is also a God of absolute holiness, no sin or unforgiven sinners can survive in his presence. As some bacteria are not able to survive in the light and die if they are exposed to it, so it is with us. In our sinful state if we were exposed to God and his incredible light, we would be destroyed instantaneously. And herein lies our dilemma.

However, God's answer to our dilemma lies in the fact that God is not only a God of infinite justice and absolute holiness, but also a God of eternal love. Because of his love, God gave his very own Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to die on the cross in our place to pay the penalty for our sins to meet the automatic demands of his (God's) justice and holiness. Christ's death made possible God's "law of the Spirit of Life"—our God-given "spiritual parachute"—to save us from eternal death.

Not to accept and use God's "parachute" means certain death from which there is no other escape. In other words, anyone who doesn't accept God's pardon will automatically die for him/herself—which means eternal separation from God, the author of all love and life, in the place or condition the Bible calls hell. All we need to do is confess our sinfulness, believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that he died in our place for our sins, and ask God for, and accept, his forgiveness and pardon.

Fwd: [FAIR Newsletter] UK Celebrates 10 Years Of Whistleblower Protection

UK Celebrates 10 Years Of Whistleblower Protection

FAIR offers sincere congratulations to our sister organization in the UK, Public Concern At Work (PCAW) on what it has accomplished since its foundation in 1993. Thanks to PCAW's efforts the UK has had strong, well-designed whistleblower protection legislation in place for more than 10 years.

PCAW recently issued a comprehensive report Where's Whistleblowing Now? which examines the progress made over the past decade and provides a wealth of information. The report paints a picture of a system that is generally working fairly well to ensure that whistleblowers are protected and to help them obtain appropriate remedies if they suffer reprisals.

Areas of progress include: greater awareness of employee rights and greater willingness to speak out about wrongdoing; media reporting that is highly supportive of whistleblowers; and public attitudes towards whistleblowers becoming more positive. One striking finding is that in the UK 86% of senior executives employed by multinationals feel free to report a case of suspected fraud or bribery, compared with 54% in mainland Europe.

Another notable observation is that there has been a tenfold increase in the number of employees submitting claims of reprisal, rising from 157 cases in 1999 to 1,761 ten years later. This could be in part due to increasing numbers of people blowing the whistle (this statistic is not measured), but it also suggests that many UK employers still do not accept employees' right to speak up about wrongdoing in the workplace.

PCAW also notes the need for some improvements. Their main concern is that in spite of the large number of claims being made, serious systemic risks to the public interest probably still remain hidden. This is due to secrecy regarding the nature of claims being made to the tribunal; and also because whistleblowers are often forced to sign gag orders as a condition of receiving compensation for the reprisals they have suffered.

Many of of the report's findings invite unfavourable comparisons with Canada. Two examples:

  1. UK whistleblowers seem to have a reasonable chance of prevailing in their claims of reprisal: 70% of claims to the tribunal were settled or withdrawn before going to a hearing, and the whistleblower won in 22% of cases that went to a hearing.
In contrast, it is almost unheard of for a whistleblower to prevail in Canada. The only notable case in recent memory is that of Saskatchewan whistleblower Linda Merk, who won only after doggedly fighting all the way to the Supreme Court.
  2. All 21 million employees in the UK have unrestricted access to an employment tribunal where they can lodge claims of reprisal; and more than 7,000 such claims have been submitted over the past decade.
In contrast, the Canadian federal government has legislated whistleblower protection for only 400,000 public servants. Furthermore, our Public Sector Integrity Commissioner acts as a gatekeeper, deciding which cases (if any) to refer to a specially-created tribunal. Remarkably, during three years of operation her office has not yet referred a single case and the tribunal has never sat.

The report also provides summaries of 30 selected cases, a chart summarizing the status of whistleblower legislation in 44 countries, and detailed analysis of the calls fielded by PCAW's free confidential help line.

Renewal -to change or not to change

1. To Change or Not to Change

"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love."1 "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good."2

You've undoubtedly read about Swiss watchmakers who, for many years, dominated the world market for watchmaking.

"The Swiss made the best watches in the world and were committed to constant refinement of their expertise. It was the Swiss who came forward with the minute hand and the second hand. They led the world in discovering better ways to manufacture the gears, bearings, and mainsprings of watches. They even led the way in waterproofing techniques and self-winding models. By 1968, the Swiss made 65 percent of all watches sold in the world and laid claim to as much as 90 percent of the profits.

"By 1980, however, they had laid off thousands of watch-makers and controlled less than 10 percent of the world market. Their profit domination dropped to less than 20 percent. Between 1979 and 1981, fifty thousand of the sixty-two thousand Swiss watchmakers lost their jobs. Why? The Swiss had refused to consider a new development"3—the development of the digital watch.

Some time ago I wrote a Daily Encounter with the title, "If the Horse is Dead, Dismount." Some readers felt that I was suggesting that we change much of what we were doing in the church for change's sake. I was not suggesting this at all. What I was saying was we needed to make changes in our methodology where what we were doing was no longer effective. The Swiss were right in that watches were still needed. Their mistake was that they weren't open to adding a new method for watchmaking.

Years ago when I was a director of a youth organization and started changing our method of reaching teens with the gospel, I was told that my methods weren't acceptable. I was given an ultimatum—either I stayed with the "accepted ways" of doing things or get out. I chose the latter. And that's how and why ACTS International was founded. (To be perfectly honest I would never have had the courage to start my own organization had I not been "pushed out" of the one I was with.) For the next three decades I majored in publishing outreach literature which has been distributed to more than 40 million people around the world—and is still being distributed by our offices in Australia and, until recently, in New Zealand.

However, here in North America, with the revolution of electronic communications via E-mail and the Internet, had I not been willing to change my methodology once again, my work here would be dead. I haven't changed the message—just changed the way of communicating it.

Let us learn a lesson from the Swiss watchmakers. If we need to change our methods to be more effective in what we are doing, let's be willing to make and implement the necessary changes.

At the opposite end of the scale, where even some churches and Christians are making changes just to be politically correct and are thus accepting behaviors that are drastically opposed to what the Word of God teaches—let us, as the Apostle Paul advised, stand firm in the faith and in harmony with the Word of God regardless of what the secular world thinks or the media promotes.

Understanding a Woman's Language - Satire or wit for exploring the other side

blogo1charitynumber.jpgMen -what does it really mean? 3 self help Lessons

Understanding a Woman's Language - a concise compass guide for your better understanding -pass it on

Lesson 1 What does it really mean when your women says...........

"Fine" - This is the word we use at the end of any argument that we feel we are right about but need to shut you up. NEVER use fine to describe how a woman looks. This will cause you to have one of those arguments.

"Five minutes" - This is half an hour. It is equivalent to the five minutes that your football game is going to last before you take out the trash, so it's an even trade.

"Nothing" - This means something and you should be on your toes. "Nothing" is usually used to describe the feeling a woman has of wanting to turn you inside out, upside down, and backwards. "Nothing" usually signifies an argument that will last "Five Minutes" and end with the word "Fine".

"Go Ahead" (with raised eyebrows) - This is a dare. One that will result in a woman getting upset over "Nothing" and will end with the word "Fine".

"Go Ahead" (normal eyebrows) - This means "I give up" or "do what you want because I don't care". You will get a raised eyebrow "Go ahead" in just a few minutes, followed by "Nothing" and "Fine" and she will talk to you in about "Five Minutes" when she cools off.
Lesson 2  More on Understanding a Woman's Language

(loud sigh) - This is not actually a word, but is still often a verbal statement very misunderstood by men. She thinks you are an idiot at that moment and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you over "Nothing".

(soft sigh) - Again, not a word, but a verbal statement. "Soft sighs" are one of the few things that some men actually understand. She is content. Your best bet is to not move or breathe and she will stay content.

"Oh" - This word followed by any statement is trouble. Example; "Oh, let me get that". Or, "Oh, I talked to him about what you were doing last night." If she says "Oh" before a statement, RUN, do not walk, to the nearest exit. She will tell you that she is "Fine" when she is done tossing your clothes out the window, but do not expect her to talk to you for at least 2 days. "Oh" as the lead to a sentence usually signifies that you are caught in a lie. Do not try to lie more to get out of it, or you will get raised eyebrows "Go ahead" followed by acts so unspeakable that we can't bring ourselves to write about them.

Lesson 3  Even More on Understanding a Woman's Language
"That's Okay" - This is one of the most dangerous statements that a woman can say to a man. "That's Okay" means that she wants to think long and hard before paying you retributions for what ever it is that you have done. "That's Okay" is often used with the word "Fine" and used in conjunction with a raised eyebrow "Go ahead". At some point in the near future when she has plotted and planned, you are going to be in some mighty big trouble.

"Please Do" - This is not a statement, it is an offer. A woman is giving you the chance to come up with whatever excuse or reason you have for doing whatever it is that you have done. You have a fair chance to tell the truth, so be careful and you shouldn't get a "That's Okay".

"Thanks" - A woman is thanking you. Do not faint; just say you're welcome.

"Thanks a lot" - This is much different from "Thanks". A woman will say, "Thanks a lot" when she is really ticked off at you. It signifies that you have hurt her in some callous way, and will be followed by the "Loud Sigh". Be careful not to ask what is wrong after the "Loud Sigh", as she will only tell you "Nothing".

Final lesson    "Be sensitive to live long and prosper with the sweet other side "  Brother S

Lead by example is still worthwhile and leads to success

Example is Still the Best Teacher
Zig Ziglar
This event, recalled by a missionary's daughter, took place many years ago: "To celebrate the coming of Christian missionaries to a region of Zaire, a day-long event was filled with speeches, testimonies and music.

"That rally is best remembered for the way it ended. A very old man came before the crowd and insisted he be allowed to speak. He said his death was imminent, and if he did not speak now, the information he carried might never be known. He explained that when missionaries first came a century ago, his people did not trust them. They were unusual and had a strange message.

"The tribal leaders decided to test the missionaries by slowly boiling them to death. Over the months and years that followed, these tribesmen witnessed the fashion in which death and grief were handled by the missionary families. The old man said, 'It was as we watched how they died that we decided that we wanted to live as Christians.'

"The story was unknown for a hundred years. Those who died painful, strange deaths were never certain why they were dying or what impact their lives would have. Through it all, though, they stayed and preached their strange message." -- Leith Anderson ("Preaching Today," tape 126)

Fwd: Clifford Olson gets seniors' benefits

Personally I think this is outrageous and an insult to good governance practise. If you agree sign the petition and pass it on    Intuitively speaking -rewarding killers at the public expense of needy seniors or those on fixed disabilty pensions can not be right   Sieg

Dear Supporter,

The CTF has learned that 70-year-old Clifford Olson – a notorious serial child killer – has been collecting Old Age Security (OAS) and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) payments to pad his bank account while serving multiple life sentences in prison. These income support programs are meant to help seniors make ends meet, not for prisoners who already live off the government dime.

And it's not just Clifford Olson.  Under current rules, every convict over the age of 65 is eligible to apply for OAS and GIS payments.

SIGN THE PETITION OPPOSING THIS TRAVESTY

With over 500 prisoners in federal jails over the age of 65, this perk costs taxpayers over $7 million, every year.

Human Resources Minister, Diane Finley, has taken notice of Olson and his OAS and GIS collecting prison buddies and has committed to look into the situation.  Let's show her that Canadians want action now.  Support and pressure from thousands of you, your family and friends can make the difference.

Step 1: Sign the petition asking Minister Finley to ban prisoners like Clifford Olson from getting these payments.

Step 2: Forward this e-mail to everyone in your address book and encourage all of them to sign the petition too.

Thanks for all your help,
