The city took over running the festival, after a community-based team went defunct.
Brant MPP Dave Levac lauded organizers for "stepping up and saying 'we've got to party'" and the city for taking the event under its wing with help from the community.
"Canada Day needs to be celebrated here," he said. "We were here as villages and towns long before we were a country."
Levac also said he knows new Canadians feel just as passionate about their adopted country.
"More than 275,000 people choose every single year to come here. We've got something right going on."
