B.C.'s New Twist in Delivering Health Care: FCPP - Frontier Centre for Public Policy

A useful read form the globe and mail

So much about health care doesn't make sense when you think about it. Taxpayers get exercised when it's revealed a politician has spent $40 on a bottle of champagne at some dinner yet they demand little accountability around the billions of dollars spent each year on health care. Politicians, meantime, are discovering the obdurate realities of providing a service for which demand is virtually unappeasable.

A novel idea -no more hospital block funding - hospital to get paid on performance delivery that reduce wait lines . What will they think of next ....... wow . QJ

Establishing Knightly Project standards - your project reviews and comments needed

A GRAND KNIGHT AND ORGANIZATION LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE

As Knights, we have always challenged ourselves to do better. High standards have lead to high results and making a positive difference in the communities we serve

What will happen in the new decade? New renewed energy or decline ?
----------------------------------------------
During the past decade Knights have contributed more than $1.325 Billion and nearly 626 million volunteer hours to charity. We are a proud part of a 127 years tradition of excellence in doing good The Knights of Columbus, are the largest Catholic family fraternal , non profit charity organization in the world with 1.7 million members
---------------------------------------------
Renewal process -do we embrace it ?

We do not purposely leave anyone behind and truly need to know why and if we do

What is wrong is important to know so that it can be righted (Our Unity concept). Our ongoing renewal process is a success but does have its acknowledged failures - from which we can learn .We are no different then any other organization or business in this respect. The adage “To Err is human ,to learn is divine “ holds true . Knowledge is our future power.

IS A REALITY CHECK AND REVIEW NEEDED (YES -TO BEAT THE ODDS)

Beware of why projects fail and take steps to mitigate common risks. Spend the time to study and understand common project pitfalls. One of the best ways to plan for success is to learn from the mistakes of others. Use standards and best practices

Why Projects Fail     Find out why and give us your solutions

Renewal is a humbling experience

True Humility

"A man's pride will bring him low, But a humble spirit will obtain honor."1

Many people in transitional organizations suffer from a humbling experience . Change creates uncertainty and fear. This can be a good thing. Humility is not necessarily a bad thing.

"Tony Campolo tells of preaching a really good sermon in his preaching class in seminary. Campolo felt pretty proud of his outline, his arguments, and his delivery. He felt pretty proud of himself—until he read his professor's comments at the bottom of the page: 'You can't convince people that Jesus is wonderful and you're wonderful in the same sermon.'"2

I recall hearing a somewhat heated discussion between a church member and his minister. I couldn't help but overhear the member all but shouting, "I tell you, I AM humble!" The trouble is if I have to tell you how humble I am, already I've lost it.

Humility, however, is not degrading or putting yourself down or hanging your head in a false kind of shame. That's insecurity. True humility is having a realistic evaluation of yourself, recognizing your gifts, abilities, and strengths and being grateful to God for them—and putting all these gifts to good use in serving God and others. Humility also recognizes and accepts one's weaknesses and, with God's help, does something about overcoming them.

Humility is a stimulant for change for tbetter ideas and strengths in ones self .. "He who believes is strong; he who doubts is weak. Strong convictions precede great actions." .Alcott .

We have come a long way this year Brothers.

You are never too old to make a difference

A little motivation for those of you who think they can't . Use it or lose it

Never too Old

"So here I [Caleb] am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I'm just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said."1

"Emerson produced English Traits when he was 53 and Conduct of Life at 59.

"Kent wrote his Anthropology, Metaphysics of Ethics, and Strife of the Faculties at age 74.

"Oliver Wendell Holmes at 79 wrote Over the Teacups.

"Victor Hugo wrote Les Miserables at 62.

"Booth Tarkington wrote sixteen novels after age 60, some of them when he was totally blind.

"George Bernard Shaw wrote some of his famous plays at 80.

"Scott the commentator began study of Hebrew at 87.

"Jules Verne was writing his stories at 63.

"Croce the Italian philosopher published two of his works on philosophy at age 85.

"Santayana, the great Harvard philosopher, continued to write books at 88 years of age.

"Tennyson at 83 wrote 'Crossing the Bar.'

"Webster wrote his monumental dictionary at 70.

"And Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken didn't make his fortune until after he was 65."2

In God's economy we are never too old to serve God and to be a part of God's plans and what he is doing in the world today … even if we are sick and infirm, we can still be mighty prayer warriors. All we need to do is make ourselves available.

Another worthy cause for your consideration -

If you're anything like me, you're thinking about something you can do for Mother's Day next month. Well, I have a slightly different suggestion.

Next week, development ministers from G8 countries will meet to develop a plan to improve women and children's health around the world. With more than 8 million children dying before the age of 5 and more than 300,000 women dying in pregnancy and childbirth each year, I know you'll agree with me that this an important issue.

I just signed a petition asking the G8 to make sure they create a strong plan to ensure mums and babies around the world grow up healthy.

Please join me by taking action here:

The power of one -YOU

From Genesis to Revelation, God's methods are people—calling one at a time. You, too, can be one that God uses. As the unknown poet wrote:

One song can spark a moment,
One flower can wake the dream.
One tree can start a forest,
    One bird can herald spring.
    One smile begins a friendship,
    One handclasp lifts a soul.
One star can guide a ship at sea,
One word can frame the goal.
One vote can change a nation,
    One sunbeam lights a room.
    One candle wipes out darkness,
    One laugh will conquer gloom.
One step must start each journey,
One word must start each prayer.
One hope will raise our spirits,
One touch can show you care.
One voice can speak with wisdom,
One heart can know what's true.
One life can make the difference,
You see it's up to YOU!

As Edward Everett Hale said, "I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something I can do."

Are you a organizational caterpillar ? Food for thought

Vance Havner used to say that, "Worry, like sitting in a rocking chair, will keep you busy but won't get you anywhere."

This reminds me of the "famous story of Jean Henri Fabre, the French naturalist, and his processional caterpillars. He encountered some of these interesting creatures one day while walking in the woods. They were marching in a long unbroken line front to back, front to back. What fun it would be, Fabre thought, to make a complete ring with these worms and let them march in a circle.

"So, Fabre captured enough caterpillars to encircle the rim of a flowerpot. He linked them nose to posterior and started them walking in the closed circle. For days they turned like a perpetual merry-go-round. Although food was near at hand and accessible, the caterpillars starved to death on an endless march to nowhere."2

There are lots of people like this. They worry themselves sick over unfounded fears which all but paralyze them, not realizing that 95 percent of things they fear never happen, and the other five percent probably won't happen either.

Many men, when they arrive at middle age, experience a mid-life crisis with a sense of despair, feeling that they haven't accomplished anything worthwhile with their life to date, and feel that they have nothing better to look forward to in the future.

Other people wander aimlessly through life without a purpose and without any meaningful and worthwhile goals. Even more tragic are the millions who go through life without ever having made plans and preparation for life after death.

Similar to the processional caterpillars, these people not only spend their life going in circles, but go in ever decreasing circles until their life diminishes into nothing. A terrible way to live. A tragic way to die.

Does this sound like someone you know or an organization that you belong to? Break the circle or cycle  , renew the joy and life's magic and make everyone better .

courage is needed to make you grow - be a viking

Our brother and sisters in Poland lost a great leader Lech Ksczynski and 120 of their finest in the unfortunate accident meant to acknowledge and commemurate the Katyne massacre of over 20,000.of the ther very best. It is ironic that history repeats itself .

The polish people will fill the void with courage, intelligence and pluck as they have in the past and will in the future. The key ingredient is courage to stand for what they believe in.

Courage Input

"But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness."1

"Dr. Alfred Adler, the great psychologist, had an experience when he was a young boy. He got off to a bad start learning arithmetic, so his teacher became convinced that Adler was stupid when it came to mathematics. The teacher told his parents that the boy was dumb, and also told them not to expect much from him. His parents were convinced that the teacher's evaluation was correct.

"Therefore, Adler passively accepted the assessment that they had made of his abilities. And his grades in math proved that they were correct. However, one day he had a sudden flash of insight and thought he saw how to work a problem the teacher had put on the board that none of the other pupils could solve. He raised his hand and announced that he would like to do the problem. The students, and even the teacher, laughed at this. He became indignant. He strode to the blackboard and solved the problem perfectly much to everyone's amazement. And at that moment he realized that he could understand mathematics. He had been handed an unreal, negative self-evaluation, and he had believed it and performed on the basis of that assessment.

"Many of us have done the very same thing. Someone has told us that our abilities are limited, or that our dreams are unreachable. We have accepted that without question, and we go through life unhappy and unfulfilled. We become estranged from ourselves simply because we believe what others people have told us about ourselves."2

Every one of us—young and old alike—needs encouragement. To encourage someone is to put courage into them. To discourage is to take courage out of them. It costs nothing to put courage into another … to speak a kind word … to let them know you appreciate them … to tell them you believe in them … that you admire them … to thank them and so on.

So, today, make a point of putting courage into your spouse … your children … your boss … your employees … and the clerk at the local store. Go out of your way to do it. And in blessing others you will be blessed yourself.

Pope meets victims - Brantford Expositor - Ontario, CA

He prayed with them and assured them that the church is doing, and will continue to do, all in its power to investigate allegations, to bring to justice those responsible for abuse and to implement effective measures designed to safeguard young people in the future," a Vatican statement on the meeting said.
That was one of the clearest statements yet from the Vatican that it wanted local bishops to co-operate with civil authorities in prosecuting priests who abused children.

Be proud to be a Catholic - you do great good is a proper defense

Jewish Sam Miller on Catholics
Excerpts of an article written by Sam Miller, prominent Cleveland Jewish businessman-- who is NOT a Catholic.

Why would newspapers carry on a vendetta on one of the most important institutions that we have today in the United States , namely the Catholic Church?

Do you know--the Catholic Church educates 2.6 million students everyday at the cost to that Church of 10 billion dollars, and a savings on the other hand to the American taxpayer of 18 billion dollars. The graduates go on to graduate studies at the rate of 92%.

The Church has 230 colleges and universities in the U.S. with an enrollment of 700,000 students.

The Catholic Church has a non-profit hospital system of 637 hospitals, which account for hospital treatment of 1 out of every 5 people--not just Catholics--in the United States today

But the press is vindictive and trying to totally denigrate in every way the Catholic Church in this country. They have blamed the disease of pedophilia on the Catholic Church, which is as irresponsible as blaming adultery on the institution of marriage.

Let me give you some figures that Catholics should know and remember. For example, 12% of the 300 Protestant clergy surveyed admitted to sexual intercourse with a parishioner; 38% acknowledged other inappropriate sexual contact in a study by the United Methodist Church, 41.8% of clergy women reported unwanted sexual behavior; 17% of laywomen have been sexually harassed.
Meanwhile, 1.7% of the Catholic clergy has been found guilty of pedophilia. 10% of the Protestant ministers have been found guilty of pedophilia. This is not a Catholic Problem.

A study of American priests showed that most are happy in the priesthood and find it even better than they had expected, and that most, if given the choice, would choose to be priests again in face of all this obnoxious PR the church has been receiving.

The Catholic Church is bleeding from self-inflicted wounds. The agony that Catholics have felt and suffered is not necessarily the fault of the Church. You have been hurt by a small number of wayward priests that have probably been weeded out by now.

Walk with your shoulders high and you head higher. Be a proud member of the most important non-governmental agency in the United States. Then remember what Jeremiah said: 'Stand by the roads, and look and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is and walk in it, and find rest for your souls'. Be proud to speak up for your faith with pride and reverence and learn what your Church does for all other religions.

Be proud that you're a Catholic.

I am proud to be Catholic and tell everyone the same . Stand up for your faith - S.H

No more excuses in church abuse scandal - Brantford Expositor - Ontario, CA

No more excuses in church abuse scandal - Brantford Expositor - Ontario, CA

Child sexual abuse is the theft of a person's soul. Why are sentences so light?
The Criminal Code says, in section 152: "Every person who, for a sexual purpose, invites, counsels or incites a person under the age of fourteen years to touch, directly or indirectly, with a part of the body or with an object, the body of any person, including the body of the person who so invites, counsels or incites and the body of the person under the age of fourteen years, is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years ..."

That's what pedophile priests and all other pedophiles deserve. Not a transfer. Not a harsh talking-to. Not absolution, because they're old and their crimes occurred years ago.

Is hate acceptable - no from Innes

Is Hate Ever Acceptable?

"Here are six things God hates, and one more that he loathes with a passion."1

So what are the six-plus-one things that God hates?

    Eyes that are arrogant,
    A tongue that lies,
    Hands that murder the innocent,
A heart that hatches evil plots,
Feet that race down a wicked track,
A mouth that lies under oath,

    A troublemaker in the family.2

The fact is that God hates all evil because it is diametrically opposed to his nature which is perfect holiness. Another reason God hates evil is because it is destructive to those whom God loves: us!

Furthermore, we too are to hate evil; that is, the actions of evil people. As God's Word instructs his people, "Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts."3 In other words we are to love the things God loves and hate the things God hates—naturally, for the right, not selfish motives.

Suggested prayer: "Dear God, please help me to become more and more God-like in my daily living and hate all evil, and never be guilty of committing the seven things that you loathe and all other evil practices. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus' name, amen."

Fwd: [Q-jumpers-The Health Myth Busters] New nurses are just for senior patients -...

This seems to be a positive development in elder care service improvement .. Improving services for seniors at the emergency level with more qualified people.makes sense.

Seniors represent 25 per cent of all emergency department visits and approximately 50 per cent of all hospitalized seniors are admitted through the emergency department.

What are we doing in the Brant care Catchment basin? Are the numbers similiar . Is our LHIN with Woody proposing a similiars plan ?

How can we help make this happen  ?

Memorial Mass - Knights of Columbus

While the press cannot or will not mention the Knights of Columbus -we would like everyone to attend

A Knights of Columbus sponsored event

Memorial Sunday for Polish plane crash victims

Posted By Expositor Staff     Posted 1 hour ago

A  memorial mass will be held on Sunday at St. Joseph's Church on Brant Avenue for Polish President Lech Kaczynski and other leaders of the country who died in a plane crash on April 10.

"Everyone is welcome, not just the Polish community," said church member John Stys, also president of the Polish Hall on Pearl Street.

Stys, who is organizing the service, along with Father Adam Wroblewicz of St. Joseph's, said local dignitaries, including Brant MP Phil McColeman, will attend.

Kaczynski, his wife Maria, and several other members of Poland's leadership were among the 97 people who died when the plane crashed in western Russia last weekend.

They were aboard the presidential plane travelling to Russia to participate in a ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre.

The massacre occurred in a forest near Smolensk in the Second World War when the Soviets slaughtered 22,000 Polish clerics, military officers and intellectuals.

Stys said the loss of so many of Poland's high-ranking officials has touched the local Polish community. Sunday's mass at 3 p.m. is a way to recognize the victims

ethical medical conflicts -interesting info

Ethical conflicts in religious hospitals

CHICAGO (UPI) -- About one-fifth of U.S. doctors practicing in religiously-affiliated hospitals say they've had conflicts over hospitals' end-of-life and contraception policies.

"Religious hospitals represent nearly 20 percent of our health care system," study author Dr. Debra Stulberg of the University of Chicago said in a statement. "This study is the first to systematically ask physicians whether religious hospital policies conflict with their judgment. We found that for a significant number of physicians, they do."

Ninety-six percent of primary care physicians -- a representative sample of U.S. family physicians, general internists and general practitioners in 2007 -- say physicians should adhere to hospital policy, Stulberg said.

Eighty-five percent of physicians thought a doctor facing conflict with religious policies should refer the patient to another hospital, while 10 percent said a doctor should recommend an alternate treatment not prohibited by the religious hospital.

"Primary care physicians routinely see patients facing reproductive health or end-of-life decisions that may be restricted in religious healthcare institutions, so we were not surprised to learn that nearly one in five have worked in a religious setting had a conflict with their hospital," Stulberg said.

"We found that the physicians who work in religious hospitals and practices are a diverse group, from a wide range of religious and personal backgrounds, so hospitals sponsored by a specific religious denomination have providers who may not share their beliefs."

The findings are published online ahead of print in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Religious News - Vatican posts pedophilia abuse rules - ArcaMax Publishing

Religious News - Vatican posts pedophilia abuse rules - ArcaMax Publishing

Reporting pedophilic priests to police is mandatory, and defrocking without a trial will be done in the most serious cases under rules posted by the Vatican. The rules were set years ago but not made public until Monday, the Italian News Agency ANSA reported. The Catholic Church has been rocked by ever-expanding scandals, with Pope Benedict XVI personally coming under fire. The pope has been criticized for allegedly stalling action on a self-confessed U.S. predator's request to be defrocked in 1985. At that time, the pope, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, was the doctrinal overseer. Vatican officials said the rules have been in effect since 2003 when Ratzinger led the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and issued them but did not make them public, ANSA said. Making them public Monday was seen as a shift in strategy as the scandals bring light on the congregation, which Ratzinger led from 1981 until he became pope in 2005. Vatican officials said claims that the pope in his former position covered up or failed to act on allegations of pedophilia were a smear campaign.

To:   All Knights of Columbus and their families

From:  Carl A. Anderson

           Supreme Knight

Pope Benedict XVIThe Supreme Council is organizing an international effort to pray for Pope Benedict XVI and his pastoral mission leading the Church, that the Holy Father may be strengthened and uplifted at this time of considerable challenge.  All Knights are encouraged to participate in this special novena for Pope Benedict XVI, beginning on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 11th, and concluding on Monday, April 19th, the fifth anniversary of the Holy Father's election to the papacy.

Additional details and resources are available at www.kofc.org, including .pdf files of a special prayer card that will enable you to print copies locally.

Throughout the Church's history, whenever challenges have come, faithful Catholics have gathered in prayer, offering their supplications and sacrifices to God for specific intentions. Now we are called to unite our prayers for our Holy Father.

Thank you in advance for helping to spread the word about this novena, and for taking part in it yourself.

Please pass along this message to other Knights and Catholics in your area.

May God bless and sustain our pope! Vivat Jesus!

Courageous! Fight apathy and win - a worthwhile read

Who cares -we care -a worthy topic for your consideration

Apathy manifests itself in how people dress, how they talk, how they care for each other—and how concerned they are about the great issues of the day…. Apathy inevitably leads to dependency. And once we become dependent on Big Brother [the government], we are back in bondage. Can anybody really watch the dramatic growth of governmental power and not be alarmed? For the fact of the matter is that the more government acts as God, the less people depend on the one true God."

If ever there was a time when Christians need to stand up and be counted it is today. Like the frog in the kettle that, because of the deadening of its response, allows itself to slowly but surely be boiled to death, we too will allow our nation and ourselves to be overrun by those who are determined to destroy every vestige of Christianity in our nation. Little by little it is already happening.

However, at this time it has never been easier to stand up and be counted by actively communicating the message of God's salvation and his Truth by a tactful use of the electronic media by forwarding suitable messages and websites to all of our contacts.

What ever you believe if this message doesnt have some impact on the lifestyle we now exist by, God help us in the future..

Here is a message with merit - please kill the apathy, stand up and make a difference  From the USA a message that needs to be repeated

Good morning all, Mixing politics with religion isn't always bad, pretty cool prayer, hope they listen.

This took Guts and courage
(although it shouldn't have)

This is absolutely great ! ! !

A Pastor with GUTS!

Thought you might enjoy this interesting
prayer given in Kansas at
the opening session of their Senate. It seems

prayer still upsets some
people.. When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open

the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is

What they heard:

Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask
Your forgiveness and to seek your direction and
Guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those
Who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we
Have done.

We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed
Our values.

We have exploited the poor and called it

The lottery.

We have rewarded laziness and called it
Welfare..

We have killed our unborn and called it

Choice.

We have shot abortionists and called it
Justifiable.

We have neglected to discipline our
Children and called it building self esteem....

We have abused power and called it
Politics.

We have coveted our neighbor's possessions
And called it ambition.

We have polluted the air with profanity and
Pornography and called it freedom of expression.

We have ridiculed the time-honored values
Of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.

Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts
Today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free.
Amen!

The response was immediate. A number of
Legislators walked out during the prayer in
Protest. In 6 short weeks, Central Christian
Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than
5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls
Responding negatively. The church is now receiving
International requests for copies of this prayer
From India , Africa and Korea .

Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on
His radio program, 'The Rest of the Story, and
Received a larger response to this program than any
Other he has ever aired.

With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep
Over our nation and wholeheartedly become our
Desire so that we again can be called 'one nation
Under God.'

If possible, please pass this prayer on to
Your friends... 'If you don't stand for something,
You will fall for everything.'

Living the new Evangelization - thoughts on Grand knight Anderson challenge in the April Columbia

"Working in solidarity  with our bishops and priests, we must lead by example and show the world, the joy that comes from love and hope inspired by our faith "  A worthy challenge from Supreme Knight Carl Anderson , Knights of Columbus
What does it mean for our council ? Doing is in ...........  Lead by example
  • offer real help not platitudes or lip service to the cause, or projects at hand
  • identify problems, offer solutions  and take responsibility for our councils actions
  • do not turn your cheek , or blink and ignore bad or unworthy , unprofessional behavior  from people or groups that are affiliated with us
  • identify the dry rot in our system ,and replace or renew with the progressive fresh timbers of new thinkng whenever necessary or possible
  • Start fishing now, not later and enjoy it
  • leave no one behind      .............

------------------------------------------------------ Talking is not doing -Lead by example ----------------------------------------------
athankyou.jpgSo many Christians say that we are concerned about winning the lost to the Savior but, in reality, how many of us do anything about it? I agree with the Buddhist monk who said, "To know and not to do is not yet to know." To translate this into our Christian terminology it could be stated this way: "To believe and not to act is not yet to believe because I only truly believe that which motivates me to action."
According to Mickey Anders, "Someone suggested that we imagine this fishing club where the members merely sit around swapping fish stories about the big one they landed, the whopper that broke away, but they never stepped into a boat or cast their line in the water. What kind of a fishing club would it be whose members were content to admire the trophies on the wall, but never go out and actually go fishing?
"A lot of churches are like that. They sit around bragging about the days when their boat was full of fresh fish. They look nostalgically to the days when the main purpose of their church was to go fishing, to reach others for Christ. But they never actually go fishing; they merely talk about going fishing. That's not what we're supposed to be about as a church."2

Better communication ,better charity results  -Our renewal mission

The ways we communicate and build community are changing. Canadians are spending more time in front of computer screens than TV sets; social media tools are proving to be powerful tools for engagement; and online giving has increased on average over 50% each year since 2004. Charities can't be left out.  In order to support their missions, charities need to experience and engage  online tools to create awareness, build community and fundraise.

The purpose of this information series  is to improve our effectiveness in the following areas:
  • Online Fundraising
  • Social Media Policies
  • Storytelling Online
  • Social Media Planning
  • Mobile Giving
  • Building Online Communities
  • Social Media for Social Change
  • Measuring the Impact of Social Media
