You have nothing to fear but fear itself - live -do -enjoy life

1. Fear Not (Innes)

"The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"1

"It is reported that the [former] newspaper counselor, Ann Landers,
received an average of 10,000 letters each month, and nearly all of
them from people burdened with problems. She was asked if there was
any one problem that predominates throughout the letters she receives,
and her reply was the one problem above all others seems to be fear."2

Fear, to one degree or another, is common to all mankind. People are
afraid of innumerable things: grasshoppers, bugs of all kind, snakes,
spiders, mice, the dark, closeness, intimacy, losing their health,
wealth, happiness, friendships, the unknown, ad infinitum. Some people
are even afraid of success and unconsciously set themselves up to
fail. Others are so afraid of failure, they won't step out or even
attempt to fulfill their life's ambition and goals.

The ancient king of Israel, King Saul was so jealous of David that he
set out to kill him. David had a right to be afraid and undoubtedly
was. But because of his enduring trust in God, he was able to say with
confidence, "The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man
[King Saul] to do me?" When our trust is in God, we can confidently
say the same. I like the words of the unknown poet who said:

I would rather stumble a thousand times
Attempting to reach a goal
Than to sit in a crowd
In my weather-proof shroud
A shriveled and self-satisfied soul.
I would rather be doing and daring
All of my error-filled days
Than watching, and waiting, and dying
Smug in my perfect ways.
I would rather wonder and blunder
Stumbling blindly ahead
Than for safety's sake
Lest I make a mistake
Be sure, be safe, be dead.

God has a specific goal and purpose for your life. It's okay to be
afraid, just don't allow fear to control you. Commit and trust your
life to God every day and he will be with you. Step out in faith to do
what you know and/or believe God wants you to do with your life. Don't
waste your life—make it an investment in eternity.

Proud of candidate meetings
Posted By

In response to the July 29 Expositor article on "Four candidates miss
the Taxpayers Coalition debate at the Knights of Columbus Hall ...."

With respect, the inability to communicate or conversely the inability
to hear what the people of Brantford are saying or want appears to be
an apparent common weakness in Brantford governance process. For the
record, we are proud of the "meet the candidates" public meetings in
bridging the information gap and allowing all people to make informed
and wise decisions through their power of voting for the most
qualified candidate of their choice. All candidates were invited to
the Taxpayers Coalition "meet the candidates" public scheduled events.
This information was conveyed in a grassroots manner -- by personal
invitation, phone, word of mouth, e-mail social media and well
publicized in both local newspapers and local community television. In
our opinion, the quality and participation in the debate process, by
the participants -- candidates from all wards was high. The ward and
mayors debates where extremely informative to the voters. Those that
did not attend missed an opportunity to be heard. One wise person, a
serious candidate, made the following realistic and astute observation
and comment about this public process. "If you have a job interview
with the public, it is wise to show up for the interview."

It is unfortunate that some candidates, could not or chose not to
attend, due to personal, work commitments, or other scheduling
conflicts. A special public "meet the candidates" meeting is scheduled
for Wednesday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus hall to
give these people the opportunity to speak and to ensure that everyone
is fairly represented and objectively treated. Please contact us if
you "officially" wish to participate. Respectfully speaking and with
nothing to hide.

some worthy insights on racism

Evolution and Racism Zig Ziglar

Most people in America, and particularly minorities, would agree that
racism could be the No. 1 problem in our society today. Evolution is a
major factor. Now, if you disagree with those statements, I hope you
will keep reading this column, and you should read the book "One
Blood," written by Ken Ham, Dr. Carl Wieland and Dr. Don Batten, and
published by Master Books Inc.

I believe anyone who has racist leanings and believes in science
and/or the Bible will re-examine their feelings by the time they
finish the book. Scientists say that the basic genetic differences
between any two people in the world would typically be around .2
percent. The so-called "racial characteristics," such as skin color,
eye shape, and so on, account for only 6 percent of this .2 percent
variation, which amounts to a mere .012 percent difference
genetically.

Overall, there is more variation within specific people groups than
there is between one group and another. If a white person is looking
for a tissue match for an organ transplant, for instance, the best
match may come from a black person, and vice-versa. The ABC
News-Science page stated, "What the facts show is that there are
differences among us, but they stem from culture -- not race."

The Bible states in Genesis 1:26 (New King James translation): "Then
God said, 'Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness.
Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the
air, and over the cattle over all the earth and over every creeping
thing that creeps on the earth.'" In short, people never were fish in
any part of any "evolutionary" process. They have always been "over"
fish and all other forms of life.

Acts 17:26 (New Living translation): "And he has made from one blood
every nation of men who dwell on all the face of the earth, and has
determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their
dwellings."

Evolution results (from "One Blood"): "When Adolph Hitler looked for a
final solution for what he called 'the Jewish problem,' the fact of
the Jews' existence, he had only to recall what scientists like Ernst
Haeckel promoted and liberal theologians embraced -- that a
purposeless process known as 'evolution' had generated all of life's
complexity, including civilization itself. 'It has done so through a
pitiless procedure of the strong eliminating the weak.' As the
influence of this idea spread, the Bible was increasingly taught as
myth." In short, the Jews were "deserving of" extinction.

However, it doesn't stop there. "To Hitler, people with different skin
color and facial features were 'subhuman.' His ideas came directly
from the research of fanatical Darwinists, like Haeckel, who had
popularized the idea decades earlier that human fetuses go through
their 'evolutionary history' in the womb -- from cell to fish to frog
to monkey to man." That's why many people argue that early in
pregnancy a person does not exist. What nonsense!

In the last 100 years, racism, fostered by the evolutionary theory,
has cost literally millions of lives in our world. "Since Haeckel,
Darwin, Hitler and all the rest are long dead, what does it mean for
us today? Who cares?" Then, they say, " ... Our publishing
headquarters are located (just) 30 miles from the International
Headquarters of the Ku Klux Klan -- right in the middle of the United
States. Neo-Nazis are becoming a force in Germany, and ... ethnic
cleansing -- a euphemism for mass murder -- (is) going on all over the
world as never before.

"In Australia, Aborigines were thought until very recently to be
subhuman. Thousands were deliberately murdered to provide specimens of
living missing links for Northern Hemisphere museums. The Australian
National Museum classified Aboriginal people under the heading,
'Australian Animals,' and gave instructions on how to plug up the
bullet holes 'once you had shot your specimen for science.'

"Racial hatred is not confined to white men hitting brown-, red- or
yellow-skinned people: Some Black Muslim leaders also practice racism,
and there is anti-Chinese violence in Indonesia. The Japanese in World
War II used it to justify their nation's expansionist aggression. They
had been told that they were the most highly evolved race on Earth.
After all, Europeans, with their longer arms and hairier chests, were
clearly still closer to the ape, weren't they? Chances are good you
remember the contempt otherwise reasonable white men had for 'Japs.'
Remember that we have bashed the poor Neanderthals and questioned
their intelligence. Interestingly enough, they had bigger brains than
we do! They simply looked 'different.' And recently in Texas that
horrible dragging death of the black man by white supremacists."

Space in a column does not permit me to give all the details, but the
authors give compelling reasons and scientific evidence to explain the
different skin colors and the different features that certain people
have. They go ahead to say, "As pointed out previously, most
biologists now agree that among modern humans, 'race' has little or no
biological meaning. This also argues strongly against the idea that
the people groups have been evolving separately for long periods."

I strongly encourage you to get a copy of this book. An associate of
mine, whom I have known extremely well, revealed that she did not
think there was a racist bone in her body, and yet, when she read the
book, she realized the problems that go with racism -- some so subtle
that you scarcely notice them, others so obvious that we wonder how on
earth anyone could ever have believed such a thing.

I am convinced that when we understand what evolution has done to
cause racism, it will open our eyes, causing us to take a fresh look
at the fact that our differences are primarily cultural and not
racial. I'm convinced that we are one blood.

Question: If you were in need of an organ transplant, would you insist
that it be from a person of the same color? Chances are good you
wouldn't give a hoot about the color of the donor. 'Nuff said.

Bad things happen -when a good men, groups ,churches do nothing - food for thought

Many Are Cold and a Few Are Frozen

"But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People
will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud,
abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without
love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not
lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure
rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its
power…."1

I read about a vessel discovered over a century ago among the icebergs
of the Arctic ocean. In it was the captain, frozen as he was making
his last entry in the log-book. The crew were also discovered—some in
their hammocks and some in the cabin—all frozen to death. The last
date in the log-book showed that for thirteen years that vessel had
been moving among the icebergs, "a drifting sepulcher manned by a
frozen crew."

Someone suggested that there are some churches in a similar condition.
Today's Scripture talks about people who have a form of godliness but
without its power. Certainly there are some churches and religions
like that too. They have an outward form of godliness but are frozen
in that, while they have the outward trappings of religion, they are
out of touch with God and reality.

Jesus said: "For many are called, but few are chosen."2 That is, many
are called by God but few prove themselves to be chosen ones, That is,
only a small percentage of confessing Christians do anything tangible
about God's call to follow and serve him. Someone jokingly
"translated" this verse to say, "Many are cold and a few are frozen."

While millions of people around the world desperately need the gospel,
most of us who call ourselves Christian give little for or do anything
much about it. Nor do we give much to help in that less than three
percent of Christians tithe of their income for God's work. And even
then the average church spends 95 percent of its income on itself. As
the late Vance Havner said, "Our doctrine is sound—sound asleep."

In the last few years we have seen a great increase in some of the
worst kind of violence and terrorism worldwide committed by radical
Muslims, all in the name of Allah. Let us not kid ourselves, their
relentless goal is to kill infidels, namely: Christians, Jews,
Americans and other Westerners, and also to rule the world with their
religious-political ideology.

At the same time, at least in North America, we are seeing an
ever-increasing amount of "Christian bashing." Would-be opponents of
the Christian faith are doing all in their power to destroy the very
principles upon which western civilization has been built.

The only answer to combat evil is the gospel of Jesus Christ, the
Prince of Peace, and unless we the church, and we Christians (and even
our governments) wake up and "smell the gunpowder," I am afraid we
will be witnessing an ever-increasing amount of violence and terrorism
around the world.

Let us remember the words of Edmund Burke spoken over two centuries
ago: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men
to do nothing."

More importantly, let us heed God's Word that says, "'Wake up, O
sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.' Be very
careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most
of every opportunity, because the days are evil."3

useful protection tip

Protect yourself with Wasp spray that is perfectly legal - not guns . ...---Pass it on  please

If you don't have a gun, here's a more humane way to wreck someone's evil plans for you. Did you know this? I didn't. I never really thought of it before. I guess I can get rid of the baseball bat.

Wasp Spray - A friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead.

The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray, they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection. Thought this was interesting and might be of use.

On the heels of a break in and beating that left an elderly woman in Toledo dead, self defense experts have a tip that could save your life.

Val Glinka teaches self-defense to students at Sylvania Southview High School . For decades, he's suggested putting a can of wasp and hornet spray near your door or bed.

Glinka says, "This is better than anything I can teach them."

Glinka considers it inexpensive, easy to find, and more effective than mace or pepper spray. The cans typically shoot 20 to 30 feet; so if someone tries to break into your home, Glinka says "spray the culprit in the eyes". It's a tip he's given to students for decades.

It's also one he wants everyone to hear. If you're looking for protection, Glinka says look to the spray. "That's going to give you a chance to call the police; maybe get out." Maybe even save a life.

Please share this with all the people who are precious to your life

Did you also know that wasp spray will kill a snake? And a mouse! It will! Good to know, huh? It will also kill a wasp.!!!!

This is My Country.....What is your opinion ?

Is this a wake up call or call for a special interest correction by...the people ?....

Subject: FW: This is My Country.....

My great grandfather watched as his friends died in WW1, my father watched as his friends died in WW II, and I watched as my friends died in Afghanistan.

None of them died for a  Foreign Flag.
Everyone died for the Canadian flag.
We removed Christian prayer from our schools as it might offend a minority of students not of the Christian faith.
It is politically incorrect for Public and Civil Servants to wear anything of a religious nature while serving the public, despite the fact that civil servants are allowed to wear turbans on the job as public or Civil servants. Why? – Because it is against their religion not to wear it.
In fact, our Prime Minister forbade the use of any Christian reference when a memorial service was held on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean near Halifax. The memorial was in remembrance of the 229 people that lost their lives in the
September 2, 1998 Swiss Air Flight 111 that crashed. Almost all of the crash victims were Christian.
We have removed any reference to Christianity in our Courts of Law, despite the fact that our laws are based on Christian principles and values.
Bike laws in almost all Canadian Jurisdictions require bike riders to wear safety helmets. You guessed it. – people who are required to wear turbans are exempt because a helmet is not designed to be worn over a turban.
Some ten years ago a Commission was assembled in Ontario (lobbied for by Muslims) to investigate the practicality of allowing Canadians of the Muslim faith to practice Sharia law. The Commission head (a former Attorney General in the Bob Rae NDP Government) presented the Commission findings to the succeeding Provincial Government to allow limited use of Sharia Law for Canadians of the Muslim faith. The recommendation was rejected. – It should never have gone that far and in fact the issue should never have reached a discussion stage, let alone the formation of a commission.
It is politically incorrect to wish our fellow Canadians Merry Christmas.
And the list goes on and on.
Enough is enough.
The below e-mail message needs to be viewed by every Canadian; and every Canadian needs to stand up for Canada.
We've bent over to appease the new Canadian immigrants long enough.
I'm taking a stand.
I'm standing up because the tens of thousands who died fighting in wars for this country, and for the Canadian flag can't stand up.
If you agree, stand up with me.
If you disagree, then just delete it.
And shame on anyone who tries to make this a racist message.

THIS IS MY COUNTRY!
And, because I make This statement

DOES NOT

Mean I'm against immigration!!!

YOU ARE WELCOME HERE, IN MY COUNTRY!
Welcome! To come through legally:

2. Get a place to lay your head!
3. Get a job!
4. Live By OUR Rules!
5. Pay YOUR Taxes!

And
6. Learn the LANGUAGE like immigrants
have in the past!!!
AND
7. Please don't demand that we hand over our lifetime
savings of Social Security Funds to you.

If you don't want to forward this for fear of offending someone,
Then YOU'RE  PART OF THE PROBLEM!
When will Canadians STOP giving away THEIR RIGHTS???
We've gone so far the other way...
bent over backwards not to offend anyone.
But it seems no one cares about the

that's being offended!

least we forget this lesson =no pain no gain It is a choice—a fresh choice every day

1. No Pain, No Gain

"But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I
have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified."1

I live at the top of a mile-long very steep hill and for exercise I
like to ride my mountain bike down and up our hill at least three
times a week. It's great fun riding down but riding up is another
story … and it never seems to get easier. "Do you enjoy riding?"
someone asks. My answer? "I love having ridden."

True, I don't enjoy riding up our hill. It's hard work, but I love
having ridden because of the benefits gained. There is an immediate
benefit in that it's a great stress reliever, offsetting some of the
adverse affects of stress. It also produces endorphins in the brain
that helps me feel much better emotionally than when I don't exercise
regularly. Plus it helps keep my body in shape; is great for the
circulatory system, and helps to keep fit physically. Furthermore, as
Paul suggests, discipline of the body helps to maintain discipline in
other areas of life.

Self-discipline in every area of life is a never-ending challenge but
the dividends of living a disciplined life are well worth every effort
put forth. Discipline never happens by chance. It is a choice—a fresh
choice every day!

This is a worthwhile insight -be careful -do not become addicted

Meet your new drug dealer

Forget coke, crack and smack -- because legal meds are giving street drugs a run for the money.

We've become a nation of dopers, and you don't need a shady dealer on a street corner to get high anymore.

Your doctor will do just fine.

The latest numbers reveal a sad and shocking milestone: Legal meds like painkillers and sedatives now send as many Americans to emergency rooms each year as hardcore street drugs: 1 million people.

Move over, Mary Jane!

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says ER trips due to the "nonmedical" use of painkillers alone shot up 111 percent over five years, to 305,885 in 2008 from 144,644 in 2004.

Oxycodone led the way with 105,214 ER visits, while hydrocodone accounted for 89,051 and methadone claimed 63,629, according to the numbers in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

In case you're wondering, the numbers are up across the board. Men? Up! Women? Up! Under 21? Up! Older than 21? Up, up -- and away!

There's just one area that's not up -- street drugs. But that shouldn't be a big surprise -- who needs street drugs anymore when a completely legal high is just a copay away?

The CDC says it's concerned by the increase -- which would almost be funny if so many lives weren't at stake. The feds also claim that urgent action is needed, but don't hold your breath waiting for that.

You and I both know that the last thing the Pharma-funded U.S. government will ever do is take "urgent" action against the drug companies to save your puny little life.

Save yourself instead -- treat all drugs like the dangerous meds they are... and never, ever take them unless you really, truly need them.

Keeping off the streets,

William Campbell Douglass II, M.D.

Personal honesty -a key to success -a worthwhile Innes read

Denying our faults and feelings, acting them out blindly, or lashing out and hurting others with them, is weak and immature. Acknowledging and talking them out in a responsible manner is a hallmark of the mature adult. It may not be easy, but it is true strength, and is the only way to develop growth-producing and intimate relationships.( 6 thoughts to help )

Personal Honesty: Key to Effective Relationships

"So get rid of all malicious behavior and deceit. Don't just pretend to be good! Be done with hypocrisy [dishonesty] and jealousy and backstabbing. You must crave pure spiritual milk so that you can grow into the fullness of your salvation."1

To help become personally honest, authentic and real, and thereby greatly enhance our relationships, the following steps will help:

First, realize that a normal human being has a whole spectrum of emotions ranging from love, joy, peace, wonder, through to fear, hurt, anger and so on. These are all God-given emotions. Without them, life would be characteristically dull and boring. To be emotionally whole means to be in touch with every God-given human emotion.

Second, we need to see our need and strongly desire to be honest.

Third, we need to admit and accept responsibility for any problems we have, and consider the possibility that our impaired relationships, dull marriage, unsatisfactory sex life in our marriage, anxiety, depression, destructive habits and any physical symptoms we have might be caused by unresolved super-charged repressed negative emotions.

Fourth, and most important of all, we need to learn to pray the right prayer. If necessary, tell God that you don't know how, or are too afraid, to be honest with yourself and need his help. Ask him to give you the courage to see yourself as you are and to face the truth about yourself. His answer will probably come in an unexpected way—perhaps through a book, a personal setback, a friend, a difficult or broken relationship, or some other painful situation. Unfortunately, most of us only look at our inner-self if we are hurting sufficiently.

Fifth, learn through practice to express your feelings openly and honestly, especially to the people who are important to you. If you're feeling hurt, afraid, confused, or angry, admit it and say, "I feel confused or angry." Never say, "You make me angry," or "You hurt me." This blames the other person for our response, which is always our problem and responsibility. Identify why you are feeling the way you are. For example, say, "I know my feelings are my problem, and I may be overreacting, but when you speak sharply to me as you just did, I feel hurt and/or angry." Or simply, "When you say (or do) things like that, I feel very hurt and/or angry."

If the person won't accept your feelings, write them out in a letter. If you feel you should give it to the person, sleep on it and re-write it before doing so. If they still won't accept them, try what Gary Smalley and John Trent suggest in their book, The Language of Love. Share how you are feeling by using word pictures; that is, make up a story or parable that will clearly show how you are feeling.

Finally, if I love you, I will always be open and honest with you and as the Bible suggests, I will always strive to "speak the truth in love." Therefore, I will never blame you for my feelings, but will take full responsibility for them and for handling them in a loving, non-judgmental manner.

Denying our faults and feelings, acting them out blindly, or lashing out and hurting others with them, is weak and immature. Acknowledging and talking them out in a responsible manner is a hallmark of the mature adult. It may not be easy, but it is true strength, and is the only way to develop growth-producing and intimate relationships.

Some people are unhappy as Canadians -what is your opinion?

Everyone that lives in Canada should see this.and ask for changes  .

I AM CANADIAN
I am in the minority in Calgary , Vancouver , Toronto

I was born in the forties, fifties or sixties, yet I am somehow responsible for some First Nations people being screwed out of their land in the 1700's!

I am allowed to skydive and smoke, but not allowed to drive without a seat belt.

All the money I make until mid July must go to paying taxes..

I live and work among people who believe Americans are Ignorant....
These same people cannot name this country's new territory.

On April 1st, 1999, the map of Canada changed for the first time in 50 years with the creation of Nunavut Territory .
The Northwest Territories was split and approximately 2 million square kilometers of the central and eastern arctic became ' Nunavut '.

Although I am sometimes forced to live on hamburgers and don't have a pot to piss in,
I sleep well knowing that my taxes helped purchase a nice six figure home in Vancouver for some unskilled refugee.

Although they are unpatriotic and constantly try to separate...

I am also being told that  the same tax on gasoline is also fair.

Even if I have no idea what happened to that old rifle my
Grandfather gave me when I was 14, I will be considered a criminal if I don't register it.

I am being told that spending $15 billion to promote the French language in the rest of Canada is fair when the province of Quebec doesn't support or recognize the English language.

I am being told that paying $1million for 3 Stripes
('The Voice of Fire' painting in Ottawa )
by the National Art Gallery was a good purchase, even  though 99% of this country didn't want it or will ever see it.

When I look at my pension and realize that I take home a third of what I actually make, I say
'Oh well, at least we have better health care than the Americans.'

Advisors News Industry news ADVISORS - IMF: Canada likely to outperform this year

Canada's economy is on track to grow more quickly this year than previously expected, putting it ahead of the United States and most other advanced economies, according to new estimates from International Monetary Fund.
The IMF said Thursday it's raising the 2010 growth forecast for Canada to 3.6 per cent from its previous estimate of 3.1 per cent, issued in April.
The IMF's July report also raised its U.S. growth estimate to 3.3 per cent, up from 3.1 per cent and its world estimate to 4.6 per cent from 4.2 per cent.
Asian countries with rapidly maturing economies will grow more quickly than the United States, Japan and European countries that have historically been more advanced.

Death friends and the good things that count from Ken

This really is the most beautiful explanation of death I've ever
heard. Had to send it on to my family and friends.

~DEATH~
WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO EXPLAIN IT .

A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to

Leave the examination room and said,
'Doctor, I am afraid to die.

Tell me what lies on the other side.'

Very quietly, the doctor said, 'I don't know.'

'You don't know? You're a Christian man,

and don't know what's on the other side?'

The doctor was holding the handle of the door;
On the other side came a sound of scratching and whining,

And as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room

And leaped on him with an eager show of gladness.

Turning to the patient, the doctor said,

'Did you notice my dog?

He's never been in this room before.
He didn't know what was inside.

He knew nothing except that his master was here,

And when the door opened, he sprang in without fear.

I know little of what is on the other side of death,

But I do know one thing...

I know my Master is there and that is enough.'

May today there be peace within you.

May you trust God that you are exactly
Where you are meant to be.
I believe that friends are quiet angels
Who lift us to our feet when our wings
Have trouble remembering how to fly.

"Truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to
leave, and impossible to forget."

"When good men do nothing there are normally bad consequences and loses by default"- Sieg Holle BS MBA  About us

The purpose of this working paper is to see if there is the will or means in the community to save Shoprite ( Screenprint) and the 200 jobs in a revitalized and restructured form . The Shoprite Community Corporation or SCC model has proved effective in the past and  is a means to such an end .

Facts and background:

Fact:

Shoprite is a mature Brantford headquartered company with an over  50 year tradition of providing prosperity to the community or people of Brant /Brantford in terms of higher paying jobs ,municipal, provincial, and federal tax revenue,  and is both a purchaser and proven leading supplier of needed goods and services to the Canadian and international markets.

The company is in technical receivership with estimated assets of 2.5 million and liabilities of 5 million dollars. Over 200 jobs, with an average hourly pay level of $28 are at risk . The Receiver is presently running, and winding down the 2 facilities located on Elgin street  They are in the first stage of the receivership process and fulfilling existing orders. No formal RFP for the company or its assets have been publicly posted as is required. The entity is still in operation on a scaled down basis.

Fact:

Based on information provided by political candidates at the Taxpayer Coalition sponsored "Meet the Candidates" and other concerned citizens input- there are compelling reason to retain high paying jobs in the community.

  • One in four jobs in Brantford has been lost in the economic downturn which has placed additional strains on community services and other community businesses.
  • There are many empty or underutilized industrial factories  in the Brant/Brantford community. The economic base and tax base is eroding.
  • Two mayor candidates ( Sless and Calnan)  have expressed support and suggested that a community initiative be undertaken to save the jobs and company if feasible .

Should good men in the community do something? Are their benefits that override the risks? When is talk and political posturing not enough?

·        Why not find out ? – a prudent business strategy and community decision   What is required ? –basically a will to succeed.

o       The five step process is proven and simple  - pre-feasibility( public consultation), Feasibility, Business Plan, Financial /ownership Plan , Implementation

·        Leadership required – Who will champion the cause legally?

o       An entity is needed to consolidate community interests

o       SCC  is an entity which can be formed for the specific purpose

·        Considerations

o Do the creditors have an incentive to keep the restructured company alive by receiving  a benefit greater then getting a tax write off and write downs ?

§         What acceptable terms  can be negotiated in everyone's best interests?

o       What is the market for the existing and new products that can be produced and marketed by the restructured company?

o       What good men should serve on the SOS task Force committee and in what capacity?

o       What assistance is available from government or other sources?

§         Capitalize creditor write-offs

§         Incentives  -municipal, provincial, federal

·        Training

·        Equipment

·        Product service orders

·        Other

·        Guarantees

·        Tax deferrals and grants

·        Talent or services lend for task at hand

o       Time is of the essence

Other Points to be made:

  • Once  the company is decommissioned , it is a sad fact that it will be hard to revitalize . The cost of creating the same level of  jobs has proven to be more expensive. See Enterprise benchmarks . The following adages apply
    • A bird in hand is worth many promises in the bush
    • All the kings horses and all the kings men will not be able to put humpty back together again
  • Real time starts when the Receivers asks for public tenders or RFPs. Can we be ready ? It is estimated that this is a 3 to 6 month process.

Can the SCC model work?

Yes , with a few good men, real people that are  motivated, knowledgeable, productive  and with intelligent leadership

Should we make it work?

Yes , with real action , real energy , real plans, real people –not talkers or self interested posturing .

There are 1200 people ,their families, with  their purchasing power and influence  at stake.

Is it worth a shot?        Yes        Maybe        No

1. Successful Failure     "According to your faith will it be done to you."1

In the book, Chicken Soup for the Soul, Chuck Webster tells a story about Monty Roberts, the son of an itinerant horse trainer. Growing up Monty went with his father from stable to stable, farm to farm, and ranch to ranch training horses. Consequently he missed much of his high school education. As a senior he was asked to write a paper on what career he wanted to pursue. That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing in great detail his goal to build and own a dream horse ranch.

The next day he turned his paper in. Two days later he received it back. On the front page was a large red "F" with a note that read, "See me after class." When he saw the teacher, he asked why he was given an "F".

"The teacher said, 'This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to pay large stud fees. There's no way you could ever do it.' Then the teacher added, 'If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.'"

After thinking about it for a week, he turned the paper back in exactly as he had first written it saying to the teacher, "You can keep the F and I'll keep my dream."

Today, "Monty Roberts owns a 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of a 200-acre horse ranch in San Ysidro [California]. Oh, and he still has that school paper framed over the fireplace. He didn't allow his teacher to crush his dream.2 I believe that he also owns a ranch in Santa Ynez Valley in Southern California.

Do you have a dream—especially if it is a God-given dream—don't let Satan or anyone else "pouf" it out.
Well done Brantford , Knights in making Canada Day a success.
